Photographs include preparations for the construction of the Waiopehu Hut, and views of Mt Waiopehu, in 1927, and the opening of the hut (4 March 1928), with named members of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club, Tararua Tramping Club, and various dignitaries. Discovery of a prehistoric artifact, the Waiopehu flint knife, found 4 February 1928; botanical visit to Mt Waiopehu, images of plant life, February 1928; excursion to the headwaters of the Mangahao River and first ascent of Mt Dora; topography of the Wellington Peninsula, Tararua offshoot, April 1928; ascent of Mt Wainui, April 1928. Description: Album of black & white photographs taken between January 1920 and September 1927 showing the physiography and geological formations, native flora, rivers and valleys, panoramic views with individual peaks named, and members of tramping clubs in the Tararua District. Various trips include visits to the No. 1 Gorge and No. 3 Gorge during the building of the Mangahao Hydroelectric dam; partial ascent of Mt Hector in 1921; various attempts to cross the Tararuas between Levin and Eketahuna, with the full crossing achieved March 4-7 1927; the initial outing of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club, May 25, 1927. Description: Photographs of a winter holiday at Tongariro National Park, 15-29 August, 1925. Includes distant views of Mounts Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, as well as views on the way to mountain huts at Whakapapa. Images of people including a group from the Ruapehu Ski Club, and the group with Adkin, some of whom are named. Also named is Guide Cowling, the caretaker at Whakapapa (p 4, 24). Skiing, snowball fights and tobogganing. Other images show day trips to Wairere Falls and the Tama Lakes; snow falling, and snow-laden trees.
