Description: A general and close-up view of the new settlement of Petre or Wanganui (also known as Whanganui) just after its establishment. The thatched roofing of a house is being completed by two men in the foreground and men are hauling timber for other buildings along the foreshore and from a small boat at the river's edge. Fences divide off other houses and the nearest house on the far left, middle distance is identified as Dr Peter Wilson's house, the building being thatched is the Police Office and Police Magistrate's house, a larger one is Mr E. J. Wakefield's house (ware Wikitoria), and two other are Mr Henry Churton's houses. The large cliff across the river is Shakespeare's Cliff. The accompanying text reads: This is four miles from the mouth of the river, on the north shore of Cook's Strait, 110 miles from Wellington. Description: Right-hand third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows Maori group sitting near flagpole at left, smoking long pipes, other Maori figures and three thatched buildings on the foreshore. On centre foreshore is Messrs Ridgways and Co's wharf and stores. At right is Willis Street with the Southern Cross Hotel and further back the Ship Hotel. On the other side of the bay are the Customhouse Office, Post Office, Waitt's Wharf and stores, John Wade's store, the Exchange, and Rhodes's Wharf and store. Description: A clearing amidst the elevated trunks of kauri. Sawn trunks and a hut in the background with another hut in the middle ground and five men with a lever and rope hauling an enormous trunk in the foreground. A pile of sawn logs is in the right foreground with a jacket and two axes resting against it. A saw and saw-horse are on the left, behind the men. The accompanying text reads: These trees are renowned for their excellent qualities as spars for ships; and the British navy has beeen supplied with several cargoes for this purpose. They frequently grow to the height of ninetey feet between the ground and the lowest branches. This tree is not found farther south than the Bay of Plenty or Waikato. A close copy of Charles Heaphy's watercolour Kauri Forest, Wairoa River, Kaipara, 1839 (C-025-014), Drawings and Prints Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library. The only major change is that the steep background cleared area in the watercolour has been flattened in the lithograph. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Left one-third of full panorama from Thorndon to Te Aro. Main features named. Shows houses along foreshore of Lambton Quay and Thorndon. Shows Tinakore [sic] Range, Kai Wara Wara [sic], Nga Hauranga [sic], the Terrace, Willis & Co.'s store, Kumu Toto Point and Pa, Doctor Evan's house, Colonel Wakefield's house, Barrett's hotel, Medical hall, Company's Emigration Barracks, and Government flagstaff. Immigration Barracks were established in 1840 to shelter the early immigrants from Britain on first arrival. They were on Thorndon Flat, on the site of modern Hobson Street, close to where it crosses the motorway. Early drawings suggest they comprised a group of 8 barracks enclosed by a fence.
