Royal tour 1901

Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. Description: Scenic photographs of New Zealand taken by R.H. Bartlett, photographer who was working in Auckland circa 1875 to 1880. At the beginning of the album there is a fold-out page, opening into four full-sized photographs. Most of the images are of North Island scenes, including some of Maori groups outside whare, meeting houses, and a school with thatched walls and roof, and a view of the Maori pa at Ohinemutu. Most of the other views are landscapes, including the Pink and White Terraces, the Whangarei and Waitakere waterfalls; and hot springs at Lake Rotomahana, the Champagne Fountain at Wairakei, and the Crows Nest geyser at Taupo. Railways album 3

Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. The only identifying information is a few pencilled notes giving some locations, but there are no captions identifying people. There is a large sequence showing events surrounding the first celebrations marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1934 attended by Lord Bledisloe. He had purchased the site, and donated money for the Treaty House renovations in 1932. The celebrations brought 10,000 Maori to Waitangi. The images show huge crowds, haka parties, various iwi performing, and parties of dignitaries including Lord and Lady Bledisloe, Joseph Gordon Coates and George William Forbes. Other scenes with Lord Bledisloe show him visiting the Waitaki Hydroelectric power station. Views of New Zealand include Government Tourist Bureau accomodation houses including those at Waitomo and the Hermitage (Mt. Cook); accomodation houses at Helensville and Parakai with interior and exterior views, and showing activities available (spa pools, games such as croquet, golf, and bowls); anglers standing by swordfish they have caught; skiing and ski lessons; and waterfalls. Industrial and agricultural views show dairy cows, citrus groves, the Kiwi Bacon Factory, printing presses, and race courses. A number show people at the beach at Mount Maunganui, and a large group picniking. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Panoramic view of the Maori reception to the Duke and Duchess of York at Arawa Park, Rotorua in 1927, taken by Robert Percy Moore, of Wellington. It shows the arrival of the Duke and Duchess through a palm-lined arch on the far side of Arawa Park in the left middle distance. Two large groups of warriors are facing them, crouched ready to perform their welcome haka. A group of kaumatua and kuia wearing cloaks are seated on the ground in the foreground. Sailors, members of a naval brass band are seated in front of a crowded grandstand on the far left. Spectators line the edges of the field, and there are two large marquees on the right.
