Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by Packe showing two thatched sod huts, washing strung on a line in the foreground and a sheep's carcass hanging on the left. Foothills and snow-clad Southern Alps beyond. Samuel Butler took up his station at Mesopotamia in 1860, leaving it in 1864, after doubling his money.
