Doyle, Martin, 1956- :[Qualifying for asylym] 15 February 2013

Date: 2013

From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons

By: Scoop (Firm)

Reference: DCDL-0024042

Description: Depicts a line of refugees asking an official with a clipboard what they have to do to qualify for asylum in New Zealand. The offical replies 'Say no more'. In background is the 'South Seas Asylum for the socially and politically insane i.e. New Zealanders themselves'. New Zealanders can be seen at the windows warning others to 'enter at your own risk'. Commentary from the artist: 'Given the horrific violence we're seeing on our streets and in our homes, you'd have to wonder about the mental health of any refugees who actually want to live in New Zealand. Baby JJ's horrific death illustrates a side to New Zealand the government simply wants to ignore (without addressing).' Refers to Prime Minister John Key's decision to take 150 refugees each year from Australian offshore detention centres (see TV3 10 Feb 2013). Also refers to statement by Detective Inspector Scott Beard on the sentencing of Joel Loffley for the death of baby JJ Lawrence which says there is a wider issue of vulnerable children in New Zealand being assaulted and murdered (see Newstalk ZB 14 Feb 2013).. Joel Loffley was setenced to life imprisonment with minimum non parole period of 19 years for the 2011 homicide of baby JJ Lawrence in the High Court on 14 Feb 2013. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Doyle, Martin, 1956- :[Youthless wage]. 3 May 2013

Date: 2013

From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons

By: Scoop (Firm)

Reference: DCDL-0024740

Description: Shows four figures, including Prime Minister John Key at far right, making negative statements under a heading asking 'How would our leaders react if they were put on a youth wage?'. Accompanying note from cartoonist states: "At a time when million-dollar paypackets for executives are nothing unusual, it seems a tad unfair - ageist? - to screw down the wages of young workers." Refers to a controversial new youth or Starting Out wage, introduced on 1 March, which is intended to lower the country's high youth unemployment rate. The wage will allow people aged 16 to 19 to be paid 80 per cent of the adult minimum wage for the first six months of their employment. It begins on 1 May 2013. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Doyle, Martin, 1956- :Living wages. 8 November 2013

Date: 2013

From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons

By: Scoop (Firm)

Reference: DCDL-0026626

Description: The cartoon is divided into two - 'Living-Hell wage' and 'Living-like-pigs wage'. Those in the first demand 'How do we get up there?'; Those in the second reply 'You can't - the balcony's full.' Accompanying note from cartoonist states, 'There's an almost Dickensian dichotomy between the living wage sought by some Auckland Council staff and the 123 staff who are paid [cue loud pig snorting] over $200,000.' On 8 November 2013 the Mayor of Auckland Len Brown tabled the council budget and proposed to phase in the living wage for all Auckland Council staff from 2014. The PSA said that the living wage would make a big difference to its members within the Council such as library and leisure staff who do very valuable work yet earn minimum wages. However the Living Wage coalition was disappointed that the Mayor would not extend his proposal to staff working under contract. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
