Māori who served in the Vietnam War oral history project

Description: Ten interviews with Māori who served in the Vietnam War. The interviewees were born between 1935 and 1949, and belong to iwi from rohe across Aotearoa/New Zealand. Includes interviews with Paul Kimiora Carr, Roy Tutewhakaiho Matakatia Komene, Roger Carew Aritaku Maaka, John Edwin Heremaia Marsh, William (George) Mathew, Anthony (Andy) Leon Mokaraka, Albert Sidney (Sid) Puia, Rangi Mathew Rata, James (Jim) Taia, and Charles Romi (Bunny) Tumai. Includes printed biographical forms, printed abstracts, printed pre-interview questionnaires, digital recordings, photographs, and other documentation. Awards/funding - Funded by an Award in Oral History from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, 2006. Between June 1964 and December 1972 around 3,500 New Zealand military personnel served in South Vietnam. All of the New Zealanders who served were regulars or had enlisted in the Regular Force to join V Force - New Zealand's army contingent in the US-led coalition. Māori participation in the war was substantial. The interviewees served with many of the New Zealand units deployed in Vietnam; some served with Australian units. Description: Interview with Paul Kennett born 1964 in Port Pirie, South Australia. Recalls coming to New Zealand to receive treatment for hair lip and cleft palette. Describes his childhood in Christchurch and the difficulties he experienced due to his condition. Talks about his education and career in computer technology. Describes his interest in mountainbiking. Becoming involved in the Wellington Cycle Touring Club and the rivalry between him and his brothers and other riders on cycling tours. Mentions other mountainbikers John West, Brian Toggle, Ash Rawson and Tim Galloway. Describes organising mountain bike race events from the mid 1980s including the New Zealand Off-Road Bicycle Race, Karapoti Classic and Mount Clime Bell Eliminator Downhill. Discusses his experiences with the Department of Conservation regarding policy over mountain bikes using their tracks and refers to an incident on the Heaphy Track in 1985. Talks about becoming a bicycle mechanic and travelling to the United States and participating in mountain bike races there. Mentions his brother buying 'Southern Cyclist' magazine. Talks about his own writing and publishing of the first to the fifth edition of 'Classic New Zealand Mountain Bike Rides', and the national mountain bike magazine 'New Zealand Mountain Bike Newsletter' in the late 1980s. Describes the formation of the National Off-Road Bicycle Association of New Zealand (NORBANZ) and the New Zealand Mountain Bike Association (NZMBA) in association with the Hillary Commission in the late 1980s. Describes developing the New Zealand Mountain Bike Website in December 1995 and his ongoing maintenance of it.
