Description: Interview with Travis Flint, born in Invercargill in 1924. Talks about growing up in a farming family, his schooling, and the family moving to Tauranga ca 1939/1940. Refers to working in the family citrus orchard until his call up by the Territorials aged 18, being transferred for a period to the Air Force, and travelling to Egypt in 1945. Discusses serving briefly at Forley in Italy, before being based in Trieste. Recalls hearing about the atom bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, returning to New Zealand before going to Japan in Jayforce. Discusses returning to New Zealand in late 1946, and studying at Lincoln College on a Department of Agriculture bursary. Talks about working for the Department of Agriculture as a horticultural field officer in Alexandra. Mentions taking a Plant Quarantine Officer course while in Alexandra, and then transferring to Palmerston North as a horticultural and agricultural quarantine officer. Mentions his work inspecting imported plants and incoming international mail and handling hunters' trophies. Talks about staff training at Palmerston North covering entomology, plant pathology, animal health, jurisprudence, fish identification and fumigation. Mentions treating aircraft at Ohakea. Refers to the Palmerston North seed testing station and intercepting cannabis seed. Discusses a promotion to deputy in the Port Agricultural Inspection Service in Auckland in 1963, and later becoming Regional Office Manager. Discusses the changes in treating cargo after the introduction of container shipping and air cargo, the problems with moving cargo off wharf to approved areas, and his preference for pre-treatment of goods. Describes airport processes for spraying insecticide in incoming aeroplanes and checking disembarking passengers. Comments on the development of risk passenger profiles to target passengers likely to try to bring in food, language difficulties, amnesty bins and Beagle sniffer dogs. Refers to being sent to the Islands to check practices with crops and exports. Describes relations with head office, time spent in Wellington, and meetings of regional managers. Talks about their relationship with the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service, interchange of staff between Australia and New Zealand, and development of pre- and post-clearance systems for produce and vehicles. Describes the effects of the restructuring of MAF (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) in the 1980s on his situation, retiring in 1987, and setting up a company Horticultural Quality Services. Recalls other managers he worked with in the Service including Julian Brown, Gordon Halson, Don Possin and Neil Hyde. Reflects that his role was to improve the agriculture quarantine service of New Zealand and that educating the public is one of the most important aspects of the work. Recalls attending Seddon Memorial High School (now Western Springs College) in Auckland - mentions meeting his wife Prem and their marriage in December 1968. Discusses attending the University of Auckland and studying for a Bachelors in Education and Anthropology - recalls receiving a telegram from the immigration department reminding him that he needed to pass his exams in order to stay in the country. Discusses studying for a Diploma in Social Work at Victoria University and moving to Porirua in 1974 - talks about being appointed to Massey University in Palmerston North in 1979 and working on his PhD thesis. Discusses his appointment as Race Relations Conciliator in 1995. Recalls the beginnings of his interest in race relations - mentions his time at university and work as a social worker as being catalysts. Discusses his application for the position, the appointment process, and the public reaction to his appointment. Describes the focus of the Office of the Race Relations Conciliator when he began, and his perceptions of the role of Conciliator - mentions Hiwi Tauroa. Discusses the Wanganui Polytechnic case in which the Conciliator became involved - describes how the complaint was handled, the judgement made, and the reaction from various groups involved in the case. Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1957 to 2006. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Includes photographs of buildings, mainly commercial premises, in Wellington and Wanganui, 1957-1959. Also contains images of two old farm cottages in the Wairarapa, a tree house in Paihiatua, a car yard in Petone, and a shop reusing ammunition boxes from World War II as a flowerbed in Palmerston North. A number of photographs from 2002 document the protest around the building of the inner city bypass in Wellington. These images feature Tonks Avenue, protestors, affected buildings, an individual who was to be being evicted, and protest art. Two 2006 mages show demolition on Kensington Lane. Images of people include two women drinking beer in Ohingaiti, a motorcycle family in Turangi, and young children climing on a wooden sculpture in Porirua. A series of Maori carvings in public spaces includes sculptures on the Petone Foreshore, in Te Rauparaha Park, Porirua, and Tokaanu. Description: Comprises photographs of jazz musicians and related subjects taken by Dennis Huggard, the Auckland Star and unknown photographers. Most images date from 1992-2000, but also includes several prints from the 1950s-1960s. Three ca.1960s images show unknown jazz bands performing on stage, with instruments including piano, drums, bass and trumpet. One image shows Nat King Cole working with Crombie Murdoch in 1955. Other images of jazz musicians were taken at New Zealand jazz festivals in the 1992-2000 period, including the National Jazz Festival (1992-1993, 1996, 1999), Manawatu Jazz Festival (2000), Bay of Islands Jazz Festival (1997).
