Context: Some people fear they will lose easy access to the beach as a result of the bill and others are very critical of the government's haste in pushing it through. The present government has repealed the Foreshore and Seabed Act and replaced it with legislation that removes the foreshore and seabed from Crown ownership and allows iwi to seek customary title to parts of it through the courts or through negotiation with the Government. The repealed Act is called the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill. There is criticism about the haste of the bill and anxiety about continued easy access to beaches.
