Ball recalls the family story of her great grandfather James Stewart and his involvement with a Government exploration party that travelled to Rotorua to survey the damage caused by the eruption. The article is accompanied by photographs which illustrate scences after the disaster. Ball also comments on the debate surrounding the burial or destruction of the Pink and White Terraces.
