Description: Interview with Tom Leong, born in Canton (Guangzhou), China, in 1930. Includes: memories of life in China as a child; his family background. The Sino-Japanese war which was the reason for his coming to New Zealand as a refugee. Journey to and arrival in New Zealand. The New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, and starting school in Wellington. Working with his father and brother in the green grocery trade. Tom's later education was at Victoria University via Wellington Technical College. He took a batchelor of Science, and later, at Canterbury University, a Batchelor of Engineering (Electrical). During his university years in Christchurch, Tom got involved with the local Chinese community and met his future wife, Patsey. They married in 1954. On completing his degree in 1953 Tom worked first in the State Hydro-Electricity Department. By 1959 he was working on hydro projects on the Waikato River - Ohakuri, Atiamuri and Waipapa. He then transferred to head office in the early 1960s and worked on the first stage of the project to build a link across Cook Strait (Cook Strait Cable). In 1962 Tom got the job of supply engineer with the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, and he and his family moved to Masterton. He gives an account of his lie and work in Masterton including the local organisations and projects with which he was involved. When he retired from the Wairarapa Electric Power Board in 1992, he and his wife moved to Auckland. He worked for five years as a tutor for the Electrical Development Association, and in 1997 was appointed secretary to Auckland Utility Operators Group Inc. He was also staff assessor for the Institution of Proffessional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). Tom concludes with a general statement about his experience of life in New Zealand. Description: Richard Leckey was born in Gazaiabad in 1937. Explains that his father worked for the railways, talks about his transfers and recalls memories of Kotri, railway houses and servants. Mentions his brothers and step-sisters, his own schooling at Lawrence College. Recalls his experiences of partition. Talks of his sister living in New Zealand, followed by the rest of the family, and his father's money in India. Talks of his carpentry apprenticeship in Auckland and describes his various jobs with hydro schemes. Mentions his wife's work on a psychiatric ward, his work in the same hospital and at a freezing works. Mentions his returned serviceman's loan, wanting to buy land. Talks of Maori associations, his genealogy, the SAS in New Zealand and why he left it. Explains the changes in his religions and mentions Indian religions. Talks of his family in Australia, Pakistan and England, school uniform, western clothes, mealtimes and games played and mixing with Muslim children. Mentions club membership and cultural differences. Talks of his drinking habit, settling in New Zealand and outlines the differences in lifestyle. Talks about his property in Karamea, and interest in forestry, his carpentry and building. Refers to the proposed hydroelectric scheme by Meridian Energy for the lower Waitaki River and the Resource Management Act which made it difficult to gain consent. Also refers to the politicial opinion polls which at the time had National ahead of Labour. Project Aqua oral history collection

Description: Oral history project in response to Project Aqua, a proposed $1.2 billion hydro-scheme by Meridian Energy Ltd on the Waitaki River, announced in 2001. Project Aqua would have diverted 73 per cent of the water in the lower Waitaki River into a 63 kilometre canal housing six power stations. The hydro project was ultimately cancelled in 2004. The collection contains seven interviews with a cross-section of the community, including those for and opposed to the project, and others who played representative and negotiating roles.
