In 2005 the property was owned and farmed by Richard Marmaduke Spencer-Bower and his wife Margaret. Richard is the great grandson of Marmaduke Dixon and son of Marmaduke Spencer-Bower. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Brian Martin; extracts from the shipboard diary Henry Martin kept on board the `Clontarf'; essay entitled `The Martins 1859-2008' giving the history of the farm and family; land documents and cadastral maps; photographs of family and farm; family tree; extracts from various publications; poems; extracts from 1916 farm diary kept by Victor Martin (d 1918). Original owner was Henry Martin from Staffordshire who arrived in New Zealand on the `Clontarf' in 1858 with his wife Sarah and daughter Ellen. In 1860 with Sarah's inheritance they bought Wrens Nest, East Eyreton, 6 miles from Kaiapoi. Henry died in 1898 and his wife and daughter continued to farm at Wrens nest until 1901 when they were tragically murdered by Alastair McLean, a tramp Mrs Martin had hired to help with the farm work after Henry's death. Her son George took possession of the farm. In 2008 the farm was owned by Henry's great great grandson Brian Martin.
