Description: Collection comprises first hand accounts of the Darfield earthquake by Canterbury primrary school pupils. Also includes letters of support to the National Library Christchurch Branch staff and thank you cards from pupils for the interloans of library books. The Darfield earthquake was a 7.1 magnitude earthquahe which hit the Canterbury Region of New Zealand at 4:35 am on 4 September 2010. Source of title - Supplied by Library The National Library as a government organisation has collected these papers as documentary heritage of the events of the Darfield earthquake. Description: Interview with Hone Apiti (Aged 89) born 1915 in Aotea. Sixth child of Te Whatu a Apiti and Raiha Paki, he was brought up by his grandparents. Refers to his grandmother being blind and knowledgeable in Maori herbal medicine. Mentions his original name Hone Paki, the ferntree house he grew up in, and the subsistance lifestyle of collecting seafood, growing vegetables and milking cows. Discusses his grandparents not speaking English and teaching them as he learnt the language at school. Describes his education including gaining a proficiency certificate and attending Maori Agricultural College. Recalls the Napier and Hastings earthquake and how it destroyed his school. Describes working in a flax mill in the Hauraki Plains. Mentions first meeting his first wife when she was 8 years old, and his second wife who was Pakeha. Discusses his disbelief in the supernatural world and taniwha and his religious beliefs. Talks about a serious accident, the operations he underwent, and his desire to complete certain jobs. Description: Interview with Trevor Jury, born in Featherston in 1926. Outlines his family background and refers to starting work as a message boy at the Featherston Post Office when he was 14. Talks about his duties, and comments that the message boys did not deliver the casualty telegrams during the War. Mentions being sent to telegraph school in Wellington in 1942. Refers to learning to send and receive Morse code and having to achieve 22 words per minute. Recalls the June 1942 Wairarapa earthquake while he was in Wellington, the Herd Street post office building being flooded, and doing fire watch after the earthquake. Mentions joining the Home Guard and trying to set up a Morse light signal system in the Featherston area. Recalls seeing Japanese prisoners of war being marched to the prison camp, hearing about the riot at the camp, and the court of enquiry held at the Featherston court house. Discusses his work as a telegraphist and other duties at the Featherston Post Office when he returned from Wellington in 1942, working from temporary premises until a new post office was built. Recalls setting up Morse telephone lines each morning, and refers to Creed machines [teleprinters?] which were mainly operated by women. Comments on the difficulty of sending weather reports by telegram because numbers had up to six characters whereas letters had four. Recalls working night shifts in the telephone exchange. Mentions postmaster Jack Hislop and librarian Mrs Halpin who encouraged him to continue his education, and studying for University Entrance. Recalls the housing shortage after the War. Refers to low wages in the post office and difficulty of getting promotions. Recalls the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and being the Post Office staff member at Cross Creek station when the Queen and Prince Philip travelled to the Wairarapa on the Rimutaka incline railway. Discusses leaving the post office in 1955 and working for NIMU Insurance in Wellington as an insurance assessor. Mentions being active in the New Zealand Institute of Management and the Insurance Institute. Description: David Jones born Wanganui, 1914. Outlines family background - maternal grandparents from County Cork, Ireland - mother born in Greymouth - Uncle Jack became Mayor of Greymouth. Talks about the West Coasters. Recalls the Chinese gold miners and the differences in their work conditions from the other miners. Describes growing up in Wanganui; family house in Keith Street; Masonic Lodge; father's fear of fire as a result of the great Raetihi bush fire in 1918. Recalls going to work in an electroplater's shop and at the age of 15 `doing a man's work for a slave wage'. Talks about the lack of a trade union covering electroplaters in Wanganui and the subsequent working conditions. Explains electroplating process. Moved to Wellington and recalls decent pay and work conditions and his first union meeting at the age of 22 when he requested that the Wanganui and Palmerston North area be covered by the engineers union which did eventuate. Explains that conditions had improved on moving back to his former job. Other recollections include: fishing; native school, Putiki; Maori canoes on the river; cherry trees planted by Mother Mary Aubert; influenza epidemic 1918; end of World War I celebrations; 1920s earthquake; big flood in 1926 and Foster's Hotel fire. Recalls declaration of World War II and joining Expeditionary Force, travelling in `The New Amsterdam' to Sydney, then to Singapore where they transferred to the `Aquatania' bound for Egypt. Was part of the 4th anti-aircraft regiment. Has vivid recall of events, relating many stories and mapping his movements during the war and comradeship. Talks about the dreadful living conditions during the war and gives his opinions on war. Mentions Battle of Alamein. Moved from the deserts to Bari, Italy and relates stories from the Sangro River. Talks about the fall of Cassino and experiences in Italy. Talks about life after the war and his research into rammed-earth building, using that method to build his own house which he describes. Talks about his book on the subject of rammed earth building that is being published at present. Recounts his involvement with RSA and Vietnam issues - was totally opposed to the Vietnam war. Gives reasons for living so long in Wanganui and the changes he has seen in the town. Recounts his involvement with the Four Seasons Theatre. Description: Interview with Evan McGregor, born in New Plymouth in 1935. Recalls his father dying in 1939, leaving his mother with five children to raise. Mentions milking cows by hand from age eight during the War, his schooling in New Plymouth, and his mother dying in 1948 during his first year at college. Recalls his mentor Barney Wickstead who taught him to hunt and fish as well as life skills. Mentions working on a farm at Inglewood after he left school, learning farming skills at Flock House, and then going shearing. Talks about joining the Navy in 1960 in the radio section, being on a ship sent to evacuate a sick man from Raoul Island, and being amazed at the fishing there. Comments on marrying his wife Carol in 1962, and building a house with a State Advances loan. Mentions leaving the Navy to spend more time with his family. Discusses getting a job as a lighthouse keeper on Cuvier Island, the trip by boat with his family, and spending 18 months there with two other keepers. Refers to the wildlife on the island - goats had been removed. Mentions his next posting to Stephens Island in Cook Strait. Comments that he and the children loved the lighthouse keeping lifestyle but that it was hard on wives. Reflects on the automation of lighthouses and the lost era. Discusses getting a job on Raoul Island as officer in charge and buying a house in Auckland for his family. Mentions having six weeks hospital training before he went, to cope with injuries. Describes the team on the Island and their resourcefulness, the dawn chorus and the native trees. Mentions rats being a menace to the garden, a 7.85 magnitude earthquake on 1 January 1977 and the water supply being broken. Comments on the Island's fragile environment and the unpredictable volcanic activity. Talks about the citrus trees, pigs being fed oranges, the cow, and peaches as weeds. Refers to shooting 400 goats in his first year on Raoul Island, and that by 1976-1977 regeneration was evident in the nikau forest. Mentions graves on the Island, farmer John Weir, and the decision to close the farm in 1977. Comments on having radio contact with Wellington twice a week. Talks about alcohol rations and the drinking culture. Describes later working on Campbell Island as team leader for a period, his style of management, and dealing with finding marijuana being grown in the heated glasshouse meant for growing vegetables. Reflects on Raoul Island and Campbell Island reunions. Relates that she sang in the St. David's choir, travelling there by bicycle or bus. Talks of St. Andrew's becoming part of the uniting parish and mentions the loss of the church building. Relates her enjoyment of services at the Wallaceville Church. Explains her faith and prayer mentioning Rev. Archie Kirkwood. Mentions that her family have moved away from Upper Hutt. Describes the Hawke's Bay earthquake, her father's injury, being evacuated to Palmerston North. Describes the church she attended in Ahuriri. Talks of attitudes by various denominations to each other, mentions a variety of buildings used for worship. Recalls Mr. Purvis building a Sunday School in Trentham, later used for church services. Recalls big families of six or eight children. Talks of her faith at the time of her husband's death and during the illnesses of two children. Description: Includes 6 smaller postcards published in 2013, and 10 larger postcards published in 2014. Each card shows a landscape of a central scene, serenely painted but depicting a scene of repair, or the devastation caused by the 2011 earthquakes. There are no people in the scenes. Includes pictures of Christchurch Cathedral, the Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, C F Cotter's shop, boarded-up houses, Neil Dawson's chalice sculpture, empty shops, stacked shipping containers acting as safety shields, one (shown on two different cards) with a reproduction of a Tony Fomison painting of a man with a raised hand. The "wish you were here" message is a common one on tourism postcards, but in this case it is related to the idea that the rest of New Zealand would need to visit Christchurch to appreciate fully the damage to the city and its inhabitants' psychological state.
