Comments on having several jobs, marrying young, and his wife Dawn dying during childbirth. Refers to meeting his second wife Alice when she visited the whaling station. Talks about moving to Hastings when he left whaling, working at the freezing works for a time and later owning Hilton & Mears Monumental Masons. Outlines getting a job at the Peranos' whaling station about 1950, operating a winch in his first season and then becoming a flenser. Discusses working conditions and the factory being upgraded each year. Description: Interview with Evan Gould, born in Wanganui in 1946. Refers to growing up in Wanganui and working at the Wanganui Magistrates Court from 1963 as a cadet where his duties included Births, Deaths and Marriages. Explains the tasks involved, the move from a hand-written register to typewritten pages, and checking, indexing and numbering. Refers to a promotion to the Auckland Magistrates Court in 1967, which did not handle registrations, and his work there in the Criminal section. Discusses being promoted to Registrar at Taihape where his duties including Births, Marriages & Deaths, as well as court work two days a week. Describes being appointed Deputy Registrar, Hastings Magistrates Court, and an appeal against his appointment. Refers to his role as an office manager and his aim to provide same-day service. Mentions the move of registrations to the Department of Internal Affairs 1995, and the introduction of computerisation. Discusses career pathways and restructuring in the public service, and becoming Support Services Manager for a cluster of Hawke's Bay offices. Refers to the increase in requests for copies of birth certificates over time for identity purposes such as entitlement to National Superannuation, and the problems for Maori whose births had not been registered. Comments on the increase of home births and the responsibility for midwives to report such births. Refers to the Adult Adoption Information Act 1985 and Social Welfare having to handle applications for information. Talks about performing marriages, reasons people chose to marry in a Registry Office, and the decline in such weddings with the rise of public celebrants. Description: Interviewees recall their experiences of the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake. Many remember being at school (primary and secondary) or in technical training when the earthquake struck. Others describe the sensation of being inside at work (including factory, hospital, office) or at home. Those outside describe movement in the urban and rural landscapes and subsequent damage, particularly to buildings. A number mention injuries to people.
