Interview with Bob Dunlop

Description: Interview with Robert (Bob) Gordon Dunlop, born in Hawera in 1920. Talks about his family's background in Scotland and New Zealand. Comments on his father serving in the mounted rifles in Egypt and the south of France during World War I. Talks about the hardships growing up on a dairy farm in the 1920s, living in a two-bedroom house with a family of nine and milking cows in the early morning. Discusses food, clothing, family holidays, haymaking and his schooling. Comments on Maori land issues, politics and the Depression. Refers to working for stock and station agents after leaving school, first as an office boy, then as an auctioneer's clerk and later a junior agent with a car. Talks about Hawera Aerodrome being built on part of his grandfather's farm. Recalls hearing about war being declared in Europe but not joining the army until he was 21. Talks about being assigned to serve in the Pacific after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour, and being sent to Fiji. Comments on doing construction work there, and later being sent to Norfolk Island. Refers to having Jack Marshall as Company commander. Talks about going to New Caledonia and then to Guadalcanal on American destroyers, and the devastation they found at Lunga Beach. Describes the taking of Mono Island by New Zealand troops, being in the first lot ashore, and some New Zealanders being killed by American shells. Refers to their 1914 Enfield rifles, dealing with fear and stress, and how officers dealt with the situation. Comments on the attitudes of veterans from Europe to Pacific theatre veterans after the war, and on the effects of his experiences on his life. Talks about being invalided out of the Army after returning to New Zealand and working on Alec Corrigan's farm for a time. Discusses returning to work for a stock and station agent, meeting and marrying Gladys, and their children. Description: Mary Hill (Sister Kostka) born Karaka Bay, Wellington 1915. Outlines family background - father, Geoffrey Vincent Hill killed in France 1918 - mother trained as a midwife after father's death and family moved to Christchurch. Recalls education at St Mary's Christchurch, Teschmakers as a boarder until aged 12 years and secondary at Villa Maria College, Christchurch run by Sisters of Mercy. Backgrounds decision to become a nun with the Little Company of Mary, commencing 1931, travelling on the `Maori' to Australia to the Novitiate. Outlines training as a nun and as a nurse, spending time in Hobart and Adelaide hospitals before completing nursing training 1934 and final vows as a nun in 1937. Recalls doing child care training in Hobart for four months before going to Buenos Aires. Describes small hospital in Buenos Aires and mentions the shock on seeing the architecture. Notes the Little Company of Mary had been in Argentina in San Antonio from 1913 or 1914. Talks about problems with Peron and Evita and Evita's attempt to commandeer the hospital. Discusses the political situation. Describes atmosphere when revolution succeeded. Recalls return to Wellington in 1960 and experience as Bursar in Wellington and Hawera and term in Tonga and year in Samoa in 1982. Discusses working in the United Kingdom and hitchiking around Europe - talks of visits to art galleries and the effect Van Gogh's paintings had on him. Talks about travelling to the United States and Canada - mentions artist Bernard Aris. Discusses the tense atmosphere in the United States at the time and the aggression he witnessed. Describes returning to work in television upon return to New Zealand - discusses directing Country Calendar and the difficulties he experienced adjusting back into the local broadcasting structure. Views of South Island locations include the 9/11 Memorial steel sculpture at Firefighters Reserve on the Avon River, Christchurch, the Kaiapoi War Memorial featuring a stone statue of a New Zealand soldier carved by W.T Trethewey across the road from Blackwells Department Store, Kaiapoi, wooden crosses in the dog cemetery in Diamond Bay, statues of a colonial couple and town heraldic shield outside Oamaru club (Inc), Severn Street, Oamaru, the Oamaru South African (Boer) War memorial next to the Countdown supermaket, Oamaru, which features a statue of Trooper Jack carved by Italian sculptor Carlo Bergamini and the imperial lion and the Great War memorial in Mercer which consists of a soldier statue mounted on the gun turret of the Pioneer paddle steamer.
