Description: The hand of the government finally begins to unlock the investigation into the Pike River mine disaster. In July 2013 Pike River Coal was ordered to pay $110,000 to each of the victims' families and fined $760,000 - but in the end didn't pay the fine and only paid $5000 to each family. In Spetember 2013 the New Zealand government announced plans to re-enter the sealed-off Pike River Mine where 29 men died in a series of explosions nearly three years after the event. Description: Two Wellington civil servants react to a newspaper headline saying 'Govt turns down compo for Pike River families'. One says 'That's terrible.' The other, carrying a satchel indicating that he works for 'Govt PR', agrees: 'Sure is. He missed a great photo op!' On 14 November 2014 the National government decided that there would be no government compensation paid to the families of the 29 men who died in the Pike River Mine disaster of 2011. This was a widely unpopular decision. The prime minister's knack of manipulation of the media for photo opportunities in favourable publicity events seemed to have deserted him. Description: The families of the Pike River victims assemble at the mouth of the 'Justice Mine', which has long been closed off by wooden beams labelled 'Frustration - Keep out'. One remarks 'Long tortuous, blind leads, dead ends...and any light is just a flamin' glow worm!' In December 2013 the Royal Commission investigating the Pike River mining disaster came to the end of its deliberations, without reaching any definite conclusions, without apportioning blame and without providing a sense of justice being done for the families of the victims who had no hope of reclaiming their bodies nor of reaching closure. Behind him, the prime minister, John Key, adds 'The firmest principle being "No trial, no flak for the government in election year"'. Commentary from the artist reads "Despite dropping the Pike River prosecution, and the intensely packaged spin surrounding the announcement, this tragedy is not going to disappear." On 12 December 2013 the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment announced yesterday that it was not proceeding with charges of breaching health and safety rules, as it was unlikely to obtain a conviction.
