Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Each part shows the radio broadcasting a different comment, which are things the man seems fairly indifferent to. The final two parts show the radio broadcasting that it may be losing the Pacific service, and the man seems fairly happy with that. Refers to Radio New Zealand, the 1982 Commonwealth games and sporting ties between New Zealand and South Africa. Description: Collection comprises near-daily journal entries kept by Ford from 1950 to 1986 on his calibration flights to check routes before they were used by commercial flights. Although the journal entries chiefly concern his working life with Calibration Flight, he also writes about his personal life and bringing up a family. The collection includes records of royal visit and VIP flights. Also includes reports, newspaper clippings, interviews and background files. Also contains newspaper clippings that collected by Ford relating to aeronautical topics, and articles, columns and cartoons on other subjects of interest to Ford. Other items include a selection of receipts, pamphlets, brochures and other ephemera collected by Ford during his trips to the Pacific Islands. As well as depicting the history of Calibration Flight, this collection also provides a snapshot of New Zealand life from the 1950s to 2000, as seen through the eyes of John Ford Source of title - Supplied by Library Calibration Flight was part of the New Zealand Civil Aviation Division, Ministry of Transport. It was responsible for ensuring that all flight paths and navigational aids in New Zealand were accurate. It flew VIPs, including royalty, around New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Captain Ford worked as a pilot for Calibration Flight from 1965 until his retirement. Description: Largly New Zealand material and photographs of paintings of the war in the Pacific by Allan Barclay Barns-Graham (official war artist) and Oliver Arthur Gillespie. New Zealand material includes views of coastal defences, military training at various camps, prisoner of war camps, Home Guard, public military parades, sports, army personnel including portraits, guns, tanks and other weapons, repatriated soldiers, medical units, ministerial visits, the posthumous investiture of Lt Ngarimu with the V.C., and mechanical transport. Arrangement: This collection is made up of empty negative envelopes with captions some of which have file prints attached to them, and sheets of contact prints which are also captioned. All of the negative envelopes have the relevant negative numbers written written on them. They were scattered throughout the wax boxes in which the War History collection had been housed for the last eight years. In giving the collection a general order they have been sorted into their series groups. This collection contains material which has been called the "35mm" series. They have not been arranged in numerical sequence as yet (though some might be so arranged). Any negatives will be found in the 35mm registers at 16398 - 16509. (Feb 1995)
