Description: The reminiscences mainly concentrate on the period 1842 to 1878 and were dictated to members of his family during the latter part of 1908 and beginning of 1909. They give details of White's mothers family and his father's career as a midshipman. They then go on to describe White's career in New Zealand first as a surveyor in the Horokiwi and Wellington areas, a farmer at Mohunoa (Kapiti) and Wainuiomata, in the volunteer forces which fought against Te Rangiatea, his visits to Auckland and then his later career in Mongonui [Mangonui] holding various government posts including work for the Land Commissioner. The reminiscences give White's impressions of relations between Maori and settler especially in the greater Wellington/Kapiti and Maunganui districts and recount many incidents involving such people as Te Rauparaha, Governor Grey, Fitzroy, McLean, Hadfield and many others. Description: Surveyed cadastral map of coastal sections in Raumati, between the old coach road and the main coach road from Wellington to Foxton, including Matai Road. The sections are bounded by the Wellington Manawatu Railway and the sea. Sections are numbered with acreage. Several small residential sections have been subdivided along the foreshore, while the remainder of sections are over 28 acres each. Includes survey trig measurements. Map includes a validity statement by the surveyor, and includes his name in pencil, but is unsigned. Includes several pencil annotations. According to annotations, some of the land is owned by Bowman and Phillips by 1914. Includes inset of part of the Wharemauku Stream, between Raumati and Matatua roads. Description: Shows a landscape design for an L-shaped area with lawn, vegetable gardens, and formal garden in front of a house, the footprint of which is shown at the left. A space for a tennis court is shown at the right, as is a long lawn running beside an entrance driveway. The driveway turns left towards the house and ends in a circle around a formal garden. Pencil annotations indicate the amount of soil needed to build up the planting beds and lawns. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Pencil and watercolour, 970 x 870 mm (irreg.) Provenance: The tubes in which the plan was packed were sent to Andrew Cochrane of "Boscombe Villa" of Paraparaumu (1939), and R Duncan of Manuka Street, Otaki Beach (1940). One of these may have been the owner of the property depicted.
