Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly showing facets of Christchurch and Lyttelton. The first scenes are a group portrait of men and women with the caption `Camera club (flashlight)'; two photographs of a wedding, the first a group portrait, and the second the bride and groom, both scenes taken outside on a lawn outside a conservatory; the altar at St Thomas' (Newtown, Wellington); and an exterior and an interior view of St Barnabas' Church, Norfolk Island. The rest of the album is scenes of the Christchurch and Lyttelton areas, including interior and exterior views of Christ Church Cathedral and of St Michaels' Church, Christchurch; views of Lyttelton and the Lyttelton Wharves; the Canterbury Museum and its gardens; Hagley Park and the Avon River. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Description: Photographs of Christchurch and environs, taken by the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department circa 1900s. Views outside Christchurch City include the stone monument to Kai Tahu on the site of the Kaiapohi Pa, commemorating those who died in attacks by Te Rauparaha and his northern followers Lyttelton wharf and harbour. Christchurch views include the Avon River; central city street scenes; Cathedral Square with the Cathedral and Warner's Hotel, and people using various forms of transport (horse-drawn vehicles and bicycles); the Cathedral and Canterbury Museum (both interior and exterior views). Description: Christ Church Cathedral, Christchurch, with spire being rebuilt after the 1901 earthquake. Photographer unidentified. The nave, tower and spire of Christchurch Cathedral was completed in 1881. Work on completeing the rest of the building began in 1900. In 1902 the transcepts were finished and work started on the chancel and apse. An earthquake in 1901 cracked the upper part of the spire in two places. In this photograph which dates from late 1902/1903 (see scaffolding beyond the transcept indicating work on chancel) the upper part of the spire has been removed by Messrs Graham and Greig in preparation for replacing this section with a copper covered wooden structure. The Cathedral was completed in 1904. (Information from "Vision and Reality; Christchurch Cathedral in the Square," Colin Brown, Christchurch, 2000 and "A Dream of Spires," Ian Lochhead, Canterbury University Press, 1999, page 153.) Preparation for erecting the scaffolding was reported in the Christchurch Star 15 January 1902.
