Includes correspondence, statements and receipts from Brown's solicitors, Wynyard and Purchas, of Auckland. Some of the land documents also relate to Francis McCormick of Tararu. The Maori vendors include Raika Whakarongotai, Hera Puna, Mare Teretu and Wirihana Watene relating to land sold from the 'Pure' (aka 'Te Pure') Block, near the Waihou River. Also includes agreements relating to the Te Kopua Block. Description: Reminiscences of the Bay of Islands, 1830s-1840s; letter from Fairburn's sister, Esther Hickson (1908); and extract on Hongi Hika from Carleton's life of Henry Williams. Records an early amputation of an infected leg carried out by William Williams, assisted by E T Fairburn, at Paihia, on a Mr Gray, a blacksmith, ca 1832. Mention of "first game of cricket in New Zealand" at Paihia, ca 1832 or 1833. Description: Record list of the Thames Valley and Waikato tour of the Mobile Recording Unit of NZBC and other loose papers. Topics covered in the interviews include early settler and Maori history of Thames and Waikato, including Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel, Paeroa, Pirongia, Te Awamutu and Huntly. Includes some details about the interviews with Sir Stephan Allen and Missy Mary Ann Turnbull of Morrinsville, Toki Watene and R W Hammond of Thames, Kapa Potae of Kennedy Bay (Coromandel), C H Hovell [Charlie], Hoane Te Huia of Paeroa, Mr H A Swarbrick relating to the missionary period, and Raureti Te Huia and Te One Haereiti of Te Awamutu. Some of the interviews were conducted in Maori mostly relating to early Maori and Pakeha settler history of the Waikato and Thames area, also recordings of waiata, whakatauki, whakapapa etc. Also includes a biography of Mr George Shaw of Wilson & Shaw, Huntly, and a story about Te Rauparaha's lament, [relating to leaving Kawhia] and English translation.
