Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Album of photographs relating to members of the Student Christian Movement in New Zealand who attended conferences and camps between 1922 and 1935. The only person identified in captions was Dr John Raleigh Mott, an American who was closely involved with establishing the Student Christian Movement all around the world, and who attended the New Zealand leaders' conference at Waikanae in 1926. Two others have been identified by a family friend. They are the Rev. Herbert Newell, and Eaton Hurley. Conferences and camps were held all over New Zealand, including Ashburton (1922-23); Solway (1923-24, and 1926-27); Waimate (1924-25); Cambridge (1925-26); Dr. Mott's leaders' conference at Waikanae (1926); Brighton, Hutt Park and Campbell's Bay (all held in 1927); Campbell's Bay and Brighton (in 1928); Feilding (1930-31, and 1934-35); Bombay (1932-33); and Geraldine (1933-34). There are also photographs of the World Student Christian Federation Conference in Java in 1933. Says he has worked on several farms, but mainly the family farm. Talks about joining up in 1941 for World War Two service in Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. Says he trained on horses at Burnham camp for three months, and then went to New Brighton camp and Sumner, Christchurch for coastal watch in 1942. Describes Japanese threat, guard duty, marching and food. Mentions his father applied to have him return to help with lambing. Backgrounds his grandfather Andrew Letham who emigrated from Scotland in 1862 on the 'Indian Empire' ship, farmed at Elgin, then bought Sherwood farm, Rakaia, in 1897. Says father John Letham was born in Scotland, returned there and met his cousin Janet Letham who he later married in 1925 after he bought Milburn farm, Highbank. Refers to father being corporal in army during World War One and returning with injuries. Refers to being only child. Talks about chores at Milburn farm, vegetable garden, orchard, wood chopping, milking cows, feeding pigs, sending milk to Midland Dairy Company, Ashburton, horse ploughing, growing oats. Discusses going to Methven Church every Sunday, playing the gramophone and games, trips to Caroline Bay, Timaru, in summer. Says he rode a bicycle to Highbank School and took bus to Methven High School. Discusses electricity coming, his parent getting a car after he was born and having a party line telephone. Description: Contains photographs of Hannah's shops throughout New Zealand, the R. Hannah & Co. Ltd factory in Leeds Street, and company staff. Photographs were taken between 1879 and the 1970s by the Filmograph Company Wellington, F. G. Barker, Russell Orr, Batchelor’s Candid Studio, Redfern Studios, K. E. Niven Studio, Don & Beatrice Peat Studio, Jerome Studios, and other unidentified photographers. Photographs relating to Hannah's shops show building exteriors and window displays throughout New Zealand between 1928 and circa 1980s: Ashburton, Napier (showing earthquake damage in 1931), Masterton, Wellington (Cuba Street and Lambton Quay), Greymouth, and Auckland (Queen Street, Otahuhu). Other prints depict staff, customers, and shoe displays inside shops in Blenheim, Tauranga, and at 230 Heretaunga Street, Hastings. Further photographs also relate specifically to Hannah’s shops in the Hawke’s Bay, likely during the 1940s and 1950s. Eight prints depict the exterior and interior of a shop identified as “Hastings Branch”. Twelve prints relating to the opening of Hannah's 48th branch on Emerson Street, Napier, show signs announcing an opening sale, customers waiting outside, and the shop filled with staff, customers, shoes, and price signs. Other prints depict similar sales in Greymouth and Whakatane. Nine prints depict the Leeds Street factory interior and successive stages of the mechanised shoe manufacturing process, circa 1908. Prints show the factory layout, women sewing, men using different machines to assemble shoes and attach soles or heels, people packing shoes for dispatch, supervisors in white lab coats, and stacked raw materials or half-finished shoes. One print depicts the view towards Wellington Harbour over houses and commercial buildings on Cuba, Marion and Leeds streets. Several buildings are labelled: R. Hannah & Co., Aspro, People’s Palace, and C & A Odlin Timber & Hardware Co. Ltd. A 1952 copy print is an oblique projection line drawing of the Leeds Street factory. Photographs of staff include portraits of Robert Hannah (circa 1880s), William Hannah (circa 1930), S. L. Blank (1964), R. J. McAsley (1971), and Finance Director N. East (circa 1960s). Group portraits include two prints depicting workers outside the entrance to the R. Hannah Co. Ltd Cuba Street factory and first Cuba Street shop in 1879. Six other group portraits depict possibly managers in the Wellington warehouse "Conference Room" (1966), and supervisors "on occassion of retirement party" (1975). Named staff include: D. C.
