Maori occupy land in Waiouru during winter as temperatures hit a low. They are protesting against the wild horse mustering? Description: Portrait of Minnie Gregory Havelaar photographed by George Weigel of Christchurch in 1936. This photograph was published in the New Zealand Free Lance on the 21st of October 1936. Born Wilhemina Gregorine Havelaar in Holland. In her early 20s she left Holland to live in London. In 1907 she came to New Zealand and lived here until 1914. After the outbreak of the First World War, she returned to London and worked with wounded New Zealand soldiers. After the war she returned to New Zealand and worked in the Hanmer Springs Hospital and the Bishop Julius Hostel in Christchurch. She was involved with the National Council of Women, and in 1947 set up the New Zealand branch of Save the Children Fund which she remained involved with for the rest of her life. She was awarded an MBE and the Medal of Merit by the International Union for Child Welfare, Geneva, for her work for Save the Children Fund. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: A semi-abstract poster showing a design of a map of New Zealand inside a triangular "iceberg" (the Freyberg building) which is emitting missiles. A dotted line indicates a road into the triangle from lower left. There is a female symbol in the top left corner of the poster. "Spyberg" refers to the Freyberg Building on the corner of Mulgrave and Aitken Streets. Part of that building was occupied by the Government Communications Security Bureau which provided foreign signals intelligence to the government; and, this poster suggests, to New Zealand's allies. Description: Shows coalition partners J G Coates and G W Forbes reacting with shock to the appearance of Mrs Elizabeth McCombs, 1st woman M P, who took office 13 Sep 1933. Behind Mrs McCombs is an indignant jack-in the box figure, representing the Maori race, some of whom had objected to women in Parliament.
