Description: Papers of A C Gifford and A W Bickerton whose common interest was astronomy. Gifford's other interests included Shakespeare authorship, social credit, tramping in the Te Anau-Milford area. He taught at Christ's College and Wellington College, 1895-1927. Bickerton's papers, which were sent to Gifford after Bickerton's death include 29 volumes of journals, 1911-1928, and are concerned largely with astronomy, his advancing old age and daily activities. A large mass of articles and notes refer mainly to astronomy but also to his dismissal from the academic staff of Canterbury University College by the College board of governors in 1895. Description: There are two scenes in this cartoon. In the upper scene three of Muldoon's retinue are succumbing to 'Delhi belly' and clutching their stomachs while Muldoon asks them why they can't be like him and 'ignore complaints'. Muldoon was in New Delhi attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Back in New Zealand the Social Credit party had won the East Coast Bays by-election over the National Party. At the same time a plan was being formulated by some M.P.s to oust Muldoon as leader and replace him with Brian Talboys (this was the so-called Colonels' Coup). In the lower scene in the cartoon sick-looking M.P.s are gathering outside the National Party Caucus room. One of them observes that the others looks pretty sick and asks if they have 'Delhi belly' too. He is told that it's much worse - 'it's East Coast Bays daze'. Brian Talboys is trying to comfort George Gair while others are trying to work out the cause of their discomfort. Description: In six cameos a voter in the East Coast Bays by-election explores his options by visiting the National Party, the Labour Party and Social Credit. Prime Minister Rob Muldoon (National Party) is being strangled by a snake representing the 'economy', Leader of the Labour Party Bill Rowling is involved in a fight and Social Credit leader Bruce Beetham engulfs the voter in a flood of words. The overwhelmed voter decides to vote for Social Credit whom he fails to understand but thinks must be better than the other two. Context: Although now a safe electorate for National, East Coast Bays was held for seven years by Social Credit MP Gary Knapp, from the 1980 by-election, where he defeated future National party leader Don Brash until the declining fortunes of the Democratic Party (as Social Credit renamed itself), led to Knapp being defeated in 1987 by Murray McCully, who has held the electorate since. Bruce Beetham's Social Credit Party supported Robert Muldoon's National government in the passing of special 'fast track' legislation which overrode the existing legal protection of land owners, so that the Clyde dam could be built.
