Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1839 to 1914 and most are based on Taine's own experience although they contain also an outline of the early history of the colony from other sources. He came to New Zealand aged 22 on the `Adelaide' and lived in Wellington till 1862 when he moved to Dunedin. After 1879 Taine lived in Auckland. At the end of volume 3 there is a section on early Wellington street names. Also (volume 3 p 515) there is a note on the history of Waiwera which Taine frequently visited. Photographs of members of B, D and F Battery of an artillery regiment taken at the Military Tournament at Hutt Race Course on 9th November 1891. They are standing or kneeling with their swords and their insignia can be seen on their arms. Portrait of the 1st New Zealand Contingent, taken November 1899 by Feeney Photo. Two men in naval uniform and one possibly in a mounted rifles uniform outside a tent ca 1890s. The names given are Campbell and Bell (naval) and Moorhouse. Men of an artillery regiment at the Military Tournament at Hutt Race Course in 1891 next to a wheeled gun.
