Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Photographs of the New Plymouth district, including coastal scenes, Mount Egmont, the New Plymouth wharves. Views of Parihaka include group portraits of Maori, and several of Pakeha people amongst the Maori. One shows a large party of Europeans (men and women) about which a slip is inserted into an envelope at the beginning of the album. The note lists a number of them, and states "This party of Europeans at Parihaka may have been when Major Parris was invited to visit Te Whiti one New Year - & to bring a party of friends" (signed R Allan). Names include F. Cornwall, H. Stoeker, [?] Ward, Miss Cornwall, Mrs D.K. Morrison, W.C. Weston, Mrs Sladden, Miss McKellar, Mrs Robertson, Mrs L.D. Webster, and Miss A. Hursthouse. The slip also notes "11 of the Europeans appear to have white feathers in their hats". An envelope inserted in the album identifies two young women with bicycles as Flo Avery (later Mrs Sydney Cottier), and Adele Avery (later Mrs Lou Webster), two of John Avery's daughters, who had the first bicycles in New Plymouth Quantity: 1 album(s). Description: Photographs of New Plymouth and district, including Mount Egmont, and a sequence of views of Parihaka (including the campaign of 1881). Scenes of Parihaka, especially with relationship to the 1881 incident, include views of the pa (with Te Whiti's house visible); the Rahotu volunteer camp, the Rahotu Redoubt; Fort Rolleston; Sentry Hill; Pungarehu officers' quarters and redoubt; Nelson Camp; the Taranaki Rifles and Wellington Navals. Scenic views in the area show Mount Egmont, Bell's Falls, the `Meeting-of-the-Waters', White Cliffs, Sugar Loaf Islands, the New Plymouth breakwater, and views of the New Plymouth Recreation Ground.
