Description: Carved house at Te Hauke, Hawke's Bay, showing a family in residence, with laundry hanging in the foreground. Photograph taken between 1880 and 1900 by Samuel Carnell of Napier. The carved house Kahuranaki may be seen in the left background. Dated from Carnell's use of the dry plate process later in his career. Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999. "Maraes were, and are, widely perceived by many Maori as "home" regardless of the location of their domestic dwellings." (Information taken from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display). A cast of the pare in the doorway of this house is illustrated in "Carved Maori houses of the Eastern districts" by W J Phillipps (Records of the Dominion Museum, vol 1, no 2, October 1944, plate 26 figure 1). The cast, made by Augustus Hamilton and subsequently broken, is described as being from the original house at Te Hauke. This is possibly the house named Kokiri which, according to Roger Neich in "Painted Histories" (AUP, 1993, p 300) stood in front of Kahuranaki.
