Description: Family photographs relating to the McCurdie family. Many are groups of friends and family, some of whom are identified with both Christian and surnames. These include wedding photographs of Marjorie Whitton who married J.W. Nicolls on March 31, 1921 at Oamaru, with Betty and Mary Whitton as bridesmaids. Several views of homes include Woodcroft (the home of Dr John Kinder), Werneth (a house at Atawhai, Nelson), The Moorings (the home of W. & Lucy Churchward at Springlands, Blenheim), and Stonycroft (home of Mr & Mrs Free, at Masterton). One view is of snow in Christchurch city in July 1918, and one shows decorations in the interior of Dunedin Hospital for the visit of the Prince of Wales in May 1920. Description: The essay details the German origins of the Hessey family, lives of Nottinghamshire forebears of Joseph and Jane Hessey and family who immigrated to Australia in 1858 on the `Melbourne'. Jane died during the voyage and James married Caroline Stuart, a widow, in Melbourne in 1861. James and Caroline came onto Canterbury in 1862 and settled at Waikuku Creek near to James' daughter Mary and her husband John Ranby. Description: A pocket inserted inside the front cover holds two photographs of wedding celebrations at a British Army regiment in India. One of the scenes shows a large party of men and women, including British and Indian men in uniform. These were taken circa 1910. The main body of the album contains views of Canterbury, Otago and the West Coast of the South Island, taken around 1877 by an unidentified photographer. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly showing facets of Christchurch and Lyttelton. The first scenes are a group portrait of men and women with the caption `Camera club (flashlight)'; two photographs of a wedding, the first a group portrait, and the second the bride and groom, both scenes taken outside on a lawn outside a conservatory; the altar at St Thomas' (Newtown, Wellington); and an exterior and an interior view of St Barnabas' Church, Norfolk Island. The rest of the album is scenes of the Christchurch and Lyttelton areas, including interior and exterior views of Christ Church Cathedral and of St Michaels' Church, Christchurch; views of Lyttelton and the Lyttelton Wharves; the Canterbury Museum and its gardens; Hagley Park and the Avon River. The wedding groups, a young woman wearing a mortar board and gown on the steps of a church, and a family of four with their dog, are the only portraits, none of whom are identified.
