Description: View looking down Church Street towards Main Street (Elliot Street). In the foreground on the right is Harvey's (fruiter & confectioner). On the lefthandside of the street are various shops including a car hire firm, land agent and butcher. The Post Office building is further down on the left. On the opposite side of the street (at an intersection) are the premises of Gillespie and Thomson. Identifiable buildings further down the street are the Queen's Hotel (F Grubb) and at the end of the street the office of the Evening Star. Description: Lists in three columns the kinds of fireworks available. Verso has more listing. Exhibited in 'To market, to market' Exhibition of advertising and commercial ephemera from the Printed Ephemera Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library. First Floor foyer, National Library of New Zealand, 5 August - 16 September 1997. Perpetual calendar indicates that poster could date from 1909 or 1915. The reference to Kaiser Day (pro or anti the Kaiser?) could influence the decision about which of these two dates is correct. 1909 was chosen simply because a similar poster is dated 1910, but if the reference is anti-Kaiser, 1915 is the correct date. Description: Group of men (including two shop assistants) reading the war news outside the general store in Tokomaru Bay. A group of children and a male teacher are standing on the verandah gathered around the `War News' noticeboard. The shop front window displaying items of clothing can be seen behind the men in the centre of the photograph. Sign on the righthand side of the store reads `Oates Bros, Tailoring Dept. W. McCulloch, manager'. Photograph possibly taken by Oates Bros of Tokomaru Bay, ca 1915. Note on back of file print reads: "Only 1/2 of neg is still intact - the rest has been shattered."
