Description: Comprises foreword by Holt re background to travels and mostly daily diary entries describing the voyage from England to Malaya and then to Singapore, a further voyage to Australia and travelling in Australia, arriving at Perth and travelling by land across to Melbourne and later to Canberra, Townsville, Sydney and other places before coming to NZ on the `Monowai' in Dec 1935. Holt further describes her travels in NZ, partly based in Wairoaiti near Napier, but visiting family members in Taupo, Rotorua, the Chateau, and travelling extensively in the South Island. Interspersed are transcriptions of letters she wrote to her family in England, and line illustrations. Holt describes her South Island travels which began 31 Jan 1936 via Picton, Christchurch and environs, Dunedin, Invercargill, Manapouri and Doubtful Sound, the Milford and Greenstone tracks, Queenstown, the Routeburn, Wanaka and the Haast Pass, up the West Coast and back to Wairoaiti before leaving from Port Chalmers. Source of title - Transcribed from auction entry Holt travelled to NZ via Malaya and Australia from 9 Aug 1935 to 5 Jun 1936; kept a diary as well as writing letters home. Description: Three sets of photographs chiefly relating to whaling, Te Kaha, and Singapore. Taken by unidentified photographer(s) in 1957, circa 1970 to 1989. One copy black and white photograph shows a toddler in swimming costume learning to walk while being held by an adult. Dated on reverse as 1957. One group of black and white images show a whaling boat on display under a verandah [probably the 'Greyhound' whaling boat at Gisborne Museum] One set of black and white and colour images show Te Kaha beach, and on it a derelict concrete shed (interior and exterior views). Some colour images show an estuary, and a creosote bach. Colour photographs were printed May 1978. One set of colour photographs of street scenes at night show people at a restaurant, and people watching a Chinese street opera performance [probably wayang or jiexi shows] in Singapore. Includes a view of a blonde woman and blond boy, and a view of a tropical cityscape. Includes one colour postcard from Ian Wedde to Donna Malane dated 11 June 1989 which depicts a food stall in Singapore. Source of description - Images showing the whaling boat were housed in an envelope marked 'Greyhound'. Images showing the beach and bach were housed in an envelope marked 'Te Kaha'. Photocopies of the original housing are kept with the prints. Arrangement: Photographs relating to Singapore were originally delivered in a box marked 'Chinese Opera draft 6'. Photographs relating to 'Greyhound' boat and Te Kaha were delivered in a box with drafts of 'Symmes Hole' and 'Survival Arts'. The whaling boat 'Greyhound' or 'Hangutuwera' last sailed in the 1930s.
