Description: Contains letters from Arthur Allfrey to his mother and father, dated Dec 1905 to March 1906 from various places around New Zealand and July 1906 from New York. Letters describe Allfrey's visit to New Zealand including comments on racing, croquet and cricket in Auckland and Christchurch, social engagements, time spent in Rotorua and the thermal regions (including description of a tangi at Whakarewarewa), fellow Eton students he met during his travels here, weather and other sights and activities. Letters from New York describe his sight-seeing in America and his voyage back to England. Also includes a letter to Arthur Allfrey from A H Aitken, 1 July 1907 Kereone, commenting mainly on the current shooting season. Description: View of the triple archway and flagpole (known as Princes Gate) at the entrance leading from Hinemaru Street to Queens Drive, and to the gardens of the Government Sanatorium and Baths. There are wooden gates at the entranceway and a wire fence. There are noticeboards on top of the fenceposts and another close by. The Tudor Towers bathhouse (built 1906-1907) can be seen in the distance. A girl pushing a pram and a young child are in the gardens just inside the entranceway. Photograph taken by William A Price, sometime after the bathhouse was completed in 1907, and before or after Nov 1908 when a dated photograph shows the entrance way had decorated palings on either side with carved Maori figures on the posts.
