Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: There is a hand-written index inside the back cover, headed "A.G. Tibbutt, Victoria Studio, Hamilton, Feb. 14, 1907" and inscribed "To Fred & Mary, Nelson". At the end of the index it reads "Further albumns [sic] on sale". Fourteen photographs taken during construction of the Raurimu Spiral, between 1898 and 1907. The first six photographs include views of the Whanganui River at Taumarunui, the railway bridge over the river at Manunui, a landslip at Oio, and a bush road at Makatote. Photographs relating to the construction of Raurimu Spiral including a group of railway workmen erecting a camp in the bush, and a scene of camp life, tunnel construction, and snow effects at Raurimu. Description: Personal and news photographs taken and collected by J L Wilson featuring North Canterbury 1864-1907, predominantly from 1900-1907. Contains various scenes illustrating Maori life at Tuahiwi, and the powhiri welcoming Governor General Plunket and Lady Plunket (27 April 1905). Plunket series also covers Kaiapoi receptions at Borough Council Chamber and Oddfellows Hall. Other named figures include Wiremu Te Kakakura Parata, Mrs Rotangi, Chief Pohipi outside his Ashley dwelling, Manihi and his wife, and George Leech. Extensive coverage of June 1905 flood featuring damaged Ashley Railway Bridge, Waimakariri River, Gorge Bridge, Stewart's Gully Bridge, submerged farmland, and numerous images of, and relating to, the railway accident at Chaimey's Corner, including train wreck and the burial of R J Alexander (Kaiapoi Public Cemetary) and the funeral procession of John Richards (both accident victims). Other bridges in album include Rutherford's Bridge (Waiau River), Kaiapoi Suspension Bridge, and the Cust Bridge (opened 1906). Empire Bridge opening series features politician Joseph Ward, regional officials, speeches, crowds, and traction engine. Other miscellaneous photographs include Kaiapoi (funeral of trooper Nicholson of Woodend, Wilson family at Marston (Estelle, Jamie, Myra) and homestead, boat landing and bridge, domain, and woollen mills), Rangiora (Helmore's residence, high school, streets scenes, tree planting), The Lodge in Hamner Springs, Cust Dairy Factory, Cheviot (post office (1893), workmen building road (1895), and coastal scene), John Dobson's farm near Ashley, swimming races at Lyttelton dock, horse sale at farmers' co-operative, Mrs Harrison Lee speaking on balcony of Scott's Junction Hotel (Rangiora) during a prohibition rally, and workmen laying electric tramway at Bank Corner (Christchurch). Churches include Horsley Down (interior and exterior), Durham Street Methodist (Christchurch), St Barnabas (Woodend), and the opening of a new vicarage at St Stephen's (Tuahiwi), by Bishop Julius. Various boats including ketch 'Emma Sims' beached at Kaiapoi, ketch 'Winnie' on Heathcote River, and SS 'Wootton' on Kaiapoi River. Group portraits include: Reverend J Holland and the Kaiapoi parish church choir; Premiere Richard Seddon at Rangiora Sale Yards; Seddon, Ward, Lady Onslow and her son Hui, and a visiting group of North Island Maori; a group of women in matching fancy dress; Mahaanui Maori Council official photograph (1902-05); Ngai Tahu leader and politician Hori Kerei Taiaroa and family; Kaiapoi School Cadets (1904); Arbour Day in Kaiapoi Domain; and Parham and Blackwell Wedding. South African War images include parade of Amuri and also North Canterbury Mounted Rifles, members of the Cust Mounted Rifles at camp, Jack and George Oram at Durban, and Sergeant Major Crisbin on his horse. Album also includes various images taken by other photographers, including Burton Brothers and Walter Burke, and also illustrations depicting Maori life from unknown sources. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod.
