Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: The collection covers mining buildings; interior machinery including the use of scales and smelting; miners both at work and posed for the camera; panning for gold; mine railways and the carts used on them; general views of the area; and other houses and buildings in the area. Also included are the building of the power house for the Talisman Gold Mining Company in Karangahake, a gold mine battery possibly in Karangahake, and a coach pulled by five horses possibly in the Karangahake district. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George W Barltrop (who was at one time president of the Nelson Camera Club), between 1899 and 1902. Scenes include group portraits of Labour Day celebrations by the Missions to Seamen in 1900 and 1901; Prince of Wales birthday celebrations in 1901; members of a camera club (possibly in the Hutt Valley, associated with a Mr Stevens); and views of Island Bay and French Pass, with close-up views of the anchor and a sailor standing at the steering wheel on a fishing boat. In the South Island there are views of the Blenheim Road, Havelock Road, Wakapuaka Road, Cable Bay, and Bishops Peninsula (?). Two images show Indian troops who came to New Zealand as part of the tour by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Description: Views of a trip along the Whanganui River with views of Paranui kainga (listed as Parinui in the album), showing groups of whare, groups of Maori, various activities in the kainga, canoes on the river, and many scenes of waterfalls along the river. These include Taraipokiore (or Tarei-po-Kiore), Otuitu Falls, Ohura Falls, Kakahi Falls. The "Ladder scene", copy of Denton photograph, and other views of the Whanganui River and Ohura River. There is a gap in the album, followed by a separate sequence on Napier. These images include panoramic views of Napier from various locations, church buildings (including exterior and interior views of St John's Cathedral), hotel buildings and other public buildings and memorial statues. Bound by Parliamentary Library, using blank pages to bulk out the contents. Red buckram, half red morocco Catalogued by Parliamentary Library as the work of I W Wilson and ca 1910. The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library. Description: The first and largest section of this album records a trip in Canada and possibly the United States, made by a young man with a motor car about 1923. The second section are photographs taken on a visit to possibly Hawaii or Tahiti. Local people are recorded as well as a number of yachts tied up along the waterfront of a town, and a white warship. The third section include family photographs taken in Britain in the 1890s, and several shipboard views, two of which show what are probably crossing the line ceremonies involving a canvas swimming pool. Towards the end of the album a group of family photographs are associated with a large wooden New Zealand house. There is no information with the album Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
