Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: Shows two nests on the branch of a tree: the Auckland Hospital Board nest and the Whare Paia nest. A caricature of Titewhai Harawira depicted as a bird is shown in the Whare Paia nest, and an unknown man from the Auckland Hospital Board is represented in the nest on the left. A bird representing Ken Mason flies overhead, and has defecated into the faces of the inhabitants of both nests. A kiwi at lower right comments: "One in the eye for arrogance!" Extended Title - New Zealand truth The Mason Report concerned \"procedures used in certain psychiatric hospitals in relation to admission, discharge or release on leave of certain classes of patients\". The report was critical of Whare Paia, scheme was a service for Maori mental health patients, wherein it was hoped to bring together Maori and pakeha treatments and methods. The report criticised the scheme for lack of direction, purpose and structure. The title\" One flew over the cuckoo's nest\" is a reference to the American motion picture of the same name (1975, from a 1962 novel by Ken Kesey) set in a mental institution. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. Description: Speech is comprised of the 34 speech cards Baxter used in his presentation. The talk centres on the role of training to become a teacher but diverges into religion, politics, poetry, advertising, the middle classes, Maori customs and stories. Baxter uses personal anecdotes to highlight his points and briefly touches on his settlement at Jerusalem on the Wanganui River. Also included with the speech notes is a letter from Pat Whitwell describing the circumstances in which the speech notes were acquired and a personal commentary on Baxter. Baxter gave the speech cards used in this talk to Whitwell. These cards have been photocopied and donated to the Library. This speech was presented by Baxter to students at the Palmerston North Teachers College. This manuscript is a photocopy of the typed speech cards Baxter used in his talk.
