Description: Portraits of elderly Maori women with facial tattos (moko kauwae) most taken by Marti Friedlander for Michael King's book `Moko,' first published in 1972. All of the subjects lived in the North Island of New Zealand. Most of them are identified. Photographs relating to Te Puea Herangi. These include - Portraits of Te Puea at different times during her life. Photographs relating to her work, such as the group of orphaned children she fostered after the flu epidemic of 1918. The construction of the ceremonial waka (canoe) Ngatokimatawhaorua. Building works at Turangawaiwai Marae, in particular the meeting house Mahinarangi (1929), and the Maori monarch's official residence, Turongo House including the opening of this in 1938. Te Puea's tangi, and her coffin being carried up Taupiri Mountain. Maori monarch's include - King Mahuta Tawhiao (1855?-1912). King Koroki (1909-1966). Queen Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu (1931-2006). Maori soldiers from the period of the First World War. The Parliament House (Turangawaiwai House) at Ngaruawahia (built 1912-1919).
