Description: Six-panelled account of the 1957 discovery by divers of the possible remains of the Pink and White Terraces under the waters of Lake Rotomahana and of exploration (sponsored by Sir Henry Brett) in July 1886, just after the eruption of Mount Tarawera, by Alfred Warbrick and J. A. Philip, with Hau-te-Horo and Toko. Warbrick insisted on abseiling into the still active crater, and was forced to climb up again when it began to erupt. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, 330 x 565 mm. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: There are three main groups of images in this album. The first is about a climb up Mount Tarawera in September 1908. It includes views of the craters and the rift resulting from the eruption, and views over the surrounding countryside from the summit including lakes Tarawera and Rotomahana. The party also did some sailing in a launch on the lakes before moving on to the Waimangu thermal area and Wakarewarewa. The second group feature railway viaducts being constructed on the main trunk line in May 1908. Those depicted are the Makatote Viaduct, the Hapuawhenua Viaduct, and the Taonui Viaduct. There are two photographs of the road bridge over the Makatote River, and two photographs of the party picnicing in the bush by the river. The third group relates to climbing Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe over Easter 1909, and again over Easter 1910. There are views of Ngauruhoe erupting, the Mangaehuehu Glacier on Mount Ruapehu, the Crater Lake, the Ohinepango Spring, the party on both mountains, and a view Of Paretetaitonga Peak on Mount Ruapenu. Some prints in this collection have notes on the back in a consistant, neat handwriting. In three cases these are signed E N Webster, who advises that he arrived in Wellington 5 February 1918, and left 15 June 1922. During this period, as well as photographing Wellington and district, he travelled on holiday to New Zealand cities and tourist destinations. The photographs were taken between 1919 and 1921 judging from the prints that have dates. His second name was Norman, and this is the name he used to sign letters on postcards sent from Christchurch in 1919 to his mother, and a friend called May. There is also a note attached to an illustration of Ben Lomond in the collection on which he signs himself Norman Webster. Information on postcards indicate that he came from Australia, and in 1916 lived at Nambour, Queensland.
