Mount Tapaenuku climbed, February the 11th, 1925

Description: Record of six members of the Awatere Rugby Football Club who climbed Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku on the 10th and the 11th of February 1925. Four of the team had made a failed attempt at the summit the year before (1924), and two of the images in the album were taken at this time. The party foregathered at Seddon and drove up the Awatere Valley to the Hodder River where the walking began. They followed the Hodder River and then its tributary, the Shin. They spent the night in Shin Hut (built in 1880) and the next morning made the climb to the Crows Nest, passing the Pinacle, and then on to the summit. The reached Shin Hutt on the way out at four o'clock on the afternoon of the 11th of February. The six men were George Alexander Gunn, Alan Fleming, William (Bill) Dick, Jock Dick, Frank Dick, and Albert (Bert) Lawsen Kennington. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Panoramic view of ducks and swans strung between three cars and a hut after a day's shooting. At least 57 ducks and 38 swans. Corrugated iron and wood hut centre left. Two tents behind the hut. Eight men are in view, five seated near the hut, some holding guns, one on right holding a billy with a thermos flask on the ground, and a man by the hut holding a shovel. Three cars (number plates L to R, NZ 52-636, NZ 53-520 [?, part hidden], NZ 49-515). Description: Photographs of a group of men and women on a walking tour in the area of Mount Cook, Tasman Glacier, and the Malte Brun Hut. Photographs taken by Algernon Charles Gifford. This album appears to be linked with Gifford Albums 2, 5, 6 and 7. An undated article Gifford wrote for the Oamaru Mail entitled `To Mount Cook by motor car', is pasted in the back of Gifford Album 2. The article talks about a group travelling by car to Mount Cook, and then tramping in the mountains in the area. This album shows the party travelling in two Darracq automobiles, while the other albums show the party in the mountains, mountain views, the group crossing the Tasman Glacier, and relaxing at various spots on the way, including at Ball Hut and Malte Brun Hut. Description: The collection includes a typed list of headings along with their NZAC negative numbers. The related prints, some duplicated, have their negative numbers on the reverse. These are of: men with pack horses next to the Waiatoto River; men on horseback fording the Waiatoto; landing cargo from a row boat at Bruce Bay and loading up a horse and cart; the Waiatoto River; horses swimming across the Blue River; part of the Haast Range including Stargazer and Moonraker taken from the shoulder of the Glacier Dome; the Eggelings homestead at Waiatoto; a group of Maori women and children in European dress at Bruce Bay ca 1910s; Mount Aspiring from Therma Glacier; an avalanche from the shoulder of Stargazer; Mount Aspiring from near Glacier Dome; Stargazer from the upper Waiatoto; and the view looking down the Waiatoto River from the Therma Glacier. Other photographs which are not on the list but some of which have original negatives in this collection are of a small group of soldiers staying in a mountain hut and camping at the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook. One of them shows the men standing in a line in a clearing with their rifles, possibly on a military exercise. Also included is a photograph of cows in a field in the snow. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes views of Lake Coleridge, the Rakaia River, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki showing the outflow river, views from the Hermitage (including Mts Sefton and Cook), terminal moraine in the Tasman Valley, and Ball Hut and the botanising ground with gentians and mountain daisies. Slides on this sheet are numbered 176-206 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. (No. 175 of Lake Coleridge, is not noted on this sheet, but is one of those removed for the lecture series). Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. [175], 178-179, 181-184, 189, 191-194, 197, 204) showing views of Lake Coleridge and country around, Rakaia River, the road to Mount Cook (Aoraki/Mount Cook), Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook, Mount Sefton, Hermitage Hotel, and the Tasman Valley from Ball Hut looking up the glaciers. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences.
