Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways between 1937 and 1938 by unidentified photographers. Photographs in the North Island include tours between Stratford and Ongarue; Ngaruawahia celebrations in 1938 (including views of King Koroki's house which was built in 1938); Rotorua and six lakes trip; and opening ceremonies for the Hutt Railway. In the South Island views include Caroline Bay with events at the soundshell; in Timaru, views of a two-storied clubhouse and men playing bowls, a person practising croquet, and several games of tennis on a series of tennis courts; areas in Queen Charlotte Sound, Portage, Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds and Blenheim Aerodrome; Tasman and Franz Josef Glaciers; Milford Sound; Punakaiki; and Cromwell. Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. The last few images are exterior and interior views of the Dunedin Railway Station soon after it was finished in 1906. Inscriptions: Album page - John T. Mackay album

Description: Album created with aviation pioneer Horatio Murdoch MacKay. Photographs include several in which MacKay was the first man to fly across the Tasman as a passenger, making the flight with Charles Kingsford Smith. One sequence shows Boeing biplane (purchased by New Zealand Airways Ltd in 1934), shipped from Vancouver and assembed in New Zealand, and the first landing at Green Island `Aerodrome'. A number of views of different aeroplanes, both monoplanes and biplanes follows. There are a large number of postcards of Launceston, Jenolan Caves, and Ballarat in Australia, and caves in the Waitomo area of New Zealand. Photographs of a group travelling on a South Island tour by White Star Taxis, a company which MacKay established, including views of the first hotel at Wanaka `The White Star Private Hotel'. One scene shows one of the taxis after an accident. Other scenes show a group skiing, a group at the summit of the Crown Range, and a large group on a motor launch. The last sequence is chiefly family photographs, including several houses, and two different wedding parties; several portraits, possibly of Horatio MacKay's wife Helen Emma (nee Griffiths). Includes photographs of towns, cities, tourist spots, and accommodation: Fleming's Hotel, Tauranga; Waiwera Hot Springs Hotel; The Square, Palmerston North; the hospital and band rotunda in Taihape; the railway station, reservoir and other landmarks in Dunedin; the main street of Putāruru; a motor car outside Tawera Hotel; and people beside sheds and stream at Okoroire Thermal Resort. Includes scenic views in various locations: views taken around Queenstown, Laka Wakatipu, Paradise, and Glenorchy. Includes three very faded copy prints pf photographs possibly taken between 1914 and 1920 showing"Herbert [W?] Williams, Russell" near a smoke billowing from a hillside; a solider [possibly in World War One uniform] standing near square pools of water and cypress trees "cistern at [Ain Hoyle?] in the Jordan Valley"; and a view of horses amongst a scrubby field "The day [?] was taken, A.W.R in wady kelt" [probably Wadi Qelt valley in the West Bank near Jordan River]. Some photographs are annotated on reverse with name of location and persons.Most photographs do not feature people. Description: A Victorian Gothic style brick building, designed but not as built, seen from the front. A horse and carriage stand to the right of the building, with another in front. The building included a clock tower Possibly a second entry ("in the Scottish baronial style") by Sir George Troup in the 1900 competition for a design for the station, which he won with a free-style baroque design, subsequently built.
