Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1839 to 1914 and most are based on Taine's own experience although they contain also an outline of the early history of the colony from other sources. He came to New Zealand aged 22 on the `Adelaide' and lived in Wellington till 1862 when he moved to Dunedin. After 1879 Taine lived in Auckland. At the end of volume 3 there is a section on early Wellington street names. Also (volume 3 p 515) there is a note on the history of Waiwera which Taine frequently visited. Description: Material extracted by Robert McNab from New Zealand material in French archives (including the archives of the Ministere de la Marine) concerning Lavaud and his vessel l'Aube Contains significant parts of two essays written by Lavaud, commandant of L'Aube. These essays describe the attempts of colonisation of the South Island of New Zealand by the French, principally in Akaroa. Some passages try to rehabilitate Baron de Thierry. Contains various letters, most of them to Lavaud, among are which letters from Bishop Pompallier about Wallis and Futuna, letters from William Hobson and letters from C B Robinson (postmaster at Akaroa). Although most of the volume is in French, some letters are in English. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (pp 248-385). Description: Diary written by Locke on board the `Charlotte Gladstone'. Covering the period 29 Oct 1872-16 Feb 1873, the diary gives a day to day account of the voyage from Gravesend to Port Chalmers including mention of a party of Brogden's workers on board and the high number of deaths due to typhoid. Diary entries for 1891 to 1896 describe Locke's life in the Riverton area, and 1899 entries describe a voyage made to Jersey and Guernsey Islands, London and Paris. The final entries cover the period 1901 to 1909 when Locke lived in Riverton and Invercargill. Also included is a typescript of the part of the diary describing the voyage on the `Charlotte Gladstone', biographical information about Locke and his family and `Otago Daily Times' entries about the voyage of the `Charlotte Gladstone'.
