Until I bought the first outboard motor on the river, I had to row these 2 boys and self, one mile to school, and one mile home each day - for a Ferry Allowance of 6d per day!! And - out of this, I was expected - and had to - keep the boat in good repair, and replace anything that might require it - oats, rowlocks etc. I went into the bush and cut rata vines to replace broken ribs - and patched cracked and broken planking in boat.
