Description: Small group of men at Trentham Racecourse; church service and re-enactment of the landing of Captain Cook. Photographs taken in 1970 by Ans Westra. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. The first three frames show a small group of men watching a race standing on the steps of a grandstand at Trentham Racecourse. Frames 4 onwards show a church service and re-enactment of the landing of Captain Cook at Ship's Cove [i.e. Ship Cove] in Marlborough Sounds, during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in March 1970. The first and 6th frames show the Queen wearing a headscarf, greeting people. She is seen seated in the front row of a large audience. Source of descriptive information - Notes written by Westra, accompanying the corresponding proof sheet. Source of descriptive information - Date given in the first of this series by Ans Westra is February 1970, but all the information on the internet in websites such as the Captain Cook Society (www.captaincooksocisety.com/home/detail/new-zealand-list) about the visit by Queen Elizabeth II relates to her arrival in New Zealand on 12 March 1970 for the Cook Bicentenary celebrations. She arrived with the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, and Princes Anne (on her first visit to New Zealand), leaving on the 30 March.
