Description: Hand-drawn map of the area from Taumarunui following the main trunk line and the Ongarue River northwards to Mangeokewa River to the Waikato River and Waihaha River to Waituhi. Creeks, streams and rivers are named, some marked in blue. Watersheds of the Mokau, Wanganui and Waikato Rivers are prominently marked as are land blocks and mountain peaks which include height in feet. Lines of the Taringamotu Company's Tram and the Mangapehe Tram are drawn and the map includes many references to tram formations. Directions with mileages are given to Lake Taupo. Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Maori legends and hand-drawn maps accompany the photographs, bringing New Zealand geography and history alive to the young scouts. Outings include following Te Kooti's trail, searching for caves where moa bones have been found, and climbing to various trig stations in the Waikato area. Until I bought the first outboard motor on the river, I had to row these 2 boys and self, one mile to school, and one mile home each day - for a Ferry Allowance of 6d per day!! And - out of this, I was expected - and had to - keep the boat in good repair, and replace anything that might require it - oats, rowlocks etc. I went into the bush and cut rata vines to replace broken ribs - and patched cracked and broken planking in boat.
