Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Panoramic view looking down over the Manawatu River in the foreground. The road (heading from the Woodville Ferry Reserve towards Ashhurst) runs from far left centre past a house. An advertisement for "The new Essex Super Six", 'Andersen & Hansen Service Station' is on the road by the house. The road then crosses a bridge and winds along the curve of the hill on the far side. On the near side of the house there is also a section of railway line which can also be seen on a bend on the right hand side further along in the centre right middle distance. Description: Contains outward correspondence from Eric Tyndale-Biscoe to his parents Cecil Earle and Blanche Violet Tyndale-Biscoe. Also includes one letter to "Fluffs" [sister?]. Letters describe Tyndale-Biscoe's voyage to New Zealand on the ship 'Ionic', his first impressions of New Zealand travelling from Wellington to Hawke's Bay by rail, working at Wanganui Collegiate (including events such as dances), mountaineering in the Central Plateau, holidaying in Tokaanu, and riding a motorcycle around the Central Plateau area (including road conditions). He also refers to family matters, including his father's work in Kashmir, and the fact he misses Kashmir. A number of letters are written on "Harvey House, Collegiate School" letterhead. Description: Outward correspondence from Eric Tyndale-Biscoe to his parents Cecil Earl and Blanche Violet chiefly on the topic of a motoring and camping trip he made around the North Island of New Zealand. Letters include description of train travel, camping, trout fishing, driving and road conditions (including other traffic, punctures, getting bogged down, and pot holes), huts "swaggers whare", Waitomo Caves and glow worms, Maori history, manuka, tui birds, and swimming in lakes and rivers. Places he visits include Mokoia, Awakino, Te Kuiti, Waitomo, Hamilton, Tauranga, Whakatane, Opotiki, Gisborne, Lake Waikaremoana, Wairoa, Lake Tutira, and Napier. Also talks about staying in with the Reeves family [Hastings? Havelock North?], teaching, and preparation for his departure from New Zealand. Description: Rodda describes his life including background from his birth and arrival in NZ in 1884, his life on his family's farm, near Rangiriri, now Te Kauwhata, the Maori in the district, including their use of flour sacks for clothing, mosquitoes, school days, his first employment on Waerenga Experimental Farm, his experiences with early, and later, grape and fruitgrowing. In March 1905 he began work on road and rail construction at Oio and he describes work conditions and the work in some detail, until he returned to Waerenga inAug 1905. He describes his various positions within the department, often as an inspector. He joined the Legion of Frontiersmen in 1913 and the Hamilton Company of the National Military Reserve in 1939. He describes duties as a justice of the peace, his experiences during the depression and his appointment as farm manager and college superintendent at Ruakura Farm of Instruction in 1932, and breeding of pedigree milking cattle.
