Description: Vera Jane Lamb (nee Barnes) born Dunedin, 1923, spent childhood at Crookston, near Heriot. Recalls father was employed with Tuapeka County Council. Mentions the Depression and describes how family made boot polish and soap. Recalls cold West Otago winters, travelling 8 miles by bus to school in Tapanui and punishment in school which was severe. Refers to frequent snowfalls and flooding. Briefly mentions contents of School Journals. Other memories include: first job as housemaid / receptionist for Tapanui doctor followed by spell as housemaid / waitress at Tapanui Hotel; marriage in Tapanui 1940 and first home as a married couple on Cross's farm, Greenfield, describing household amenities. Talks about involvement with Green Island Bowling club. Mentions Heather Knox, Zona Fleury, Dawn Rowley and Dorothy Bernard. Recalls obtaining position as school secretary at Green Island School in 1956, a position held for 30 years. Refers to headmaster, Mr E Hoare and ex headmaster, Mr Ian McLeod. Description: James Robert Aburn born North East Valley, Dunedin 1916. Outlines family background - paternal grandfather, a builder in Dunedin, was involved in building projects including Harraway's (Harraway) Mill, Green Island and His Majesty's Theatre, Dunedin. Recalls primary schooling at Sawyers Bay School, Port Chalmers and George Street School. Mentions the `C A Larsen', a whaling ship which had struck a rock near Stewart Island and put into dry dock in Port Chalmers. Talks about secondary education at Otago Boys High School; rugby; cadet training; household chores; first pushbike (bicycle); Depression and first job in 1934 as a copyholder in the reading room of the Otago Daily Times office. Describes service in the Airforce as an A grade mechanic during World War II, spending time at Guadalcanal in a flight called Utility Flight which serviced all transport aircraft. Recalls buying Turner's Service Station in 1952 and describes part played by oil companies in financing service stations and changes in the garage business around 1970s. Mentions changes to week-end trading, pressure from oil companies and changes in work practices. Describes shearing quarters; deer culling; rabbiting; the Depression and being manpowered to Burnside Freezing Works during World War II. Talks about social change following the Labour Government coming to power in 1935. Discusses pay and working conditions at Burnside Freezing Works as a wool-puller in fellmongery, with reference to chemical burns and first-aid measures available.
