Description: Collection of photographs from an album compiled by Mrs R G Hosking. The photographs are mostly dated 1914-1918 and relate to World War One. Includes photographs taken in Egypt, England and New Zealand, depicting military personnel, naval ships, scenes at military camps, and the hospital at Brockenhurst, England. Includes portraits of Peter McIntyre Crawford, Douglas Vallance Hosking (husband of R G Hosking), Keith Melvyn Little, and other unidentified subjects. Features two photographs dated April 1924, one of Wellington taken from on board the HMS 'Hood', and another showing HMS 'Hood' on arrival at Wellington Harbour. Also includes images of naval ships NZHS 'Marama', HMAS 'Encounter', and HMNZT No. 8 'Star of India'. A fleet of ships is seen along the horizon of a postcard image captioned 'N.Z. First Contingent Sailing - Passing Island Bay' with the accompanying annotation 'This photo was taken at 4 a.m. as the ships carrying the Main Body were passing Island Bay, Wellington, on October 16, 1914'. Description: Photograph album compiled by Robert Thomas Martin containing images of New Zealand, New Caledonia, and the Solomon Islands during military training and service in World War II. Some images likely taken by Martin. New Zealand images show training camps at Rotorua (1941), Papakura (1942), 1st Field Ambulance camp in Warkworth (Jun-Sep 1942), and Fencourt [Cambridge?] (1942). In addition to informal portraits featuring Martin, Colin Arroll, and other unidentified soldiers, there are images of tents, a route march, a hospital under construction and parked ambulances (at Warkworth), and a Bob Semple tank with soldiers and Martin and his sister Valerie posed in front (at Papakura). Identified groups include Warrant Officers and Sergeants in 1st Field Ambulance in Papakura, 7th Field Ambulance, and D Company. Also image of Martin walking down a street in uniform while on leave. Images from Rotorua also show Regent Theatre (exterior and courtyard), Post Office, Sanatorium building and grounds, St Faith’s Church (Ohinemutu), swimming scenes at the Blue Baths, and Maori children diving for pennies [at Whakarewarewa?]. A 1940 series of images at a house in [Auckland?] show Martin in uniform with various people including his Uncle Frank, Guy [?], and a number of young women [relatives, including his sister Valerie?]. Martin is also photographed with a dog [Collie?]. Images from service in New Caledonia, Jan-Aug 1943, feature group photographs of the B Company 7th New Zealand Field Ambulance at Nemeara and Nepoui Valley. Identified people in informal group and individual portraits at the Nemeara Camp are Doug Smith, Wally McKusker, Doug Smith, Stan Poomore, Shorty Luscombe, Jack Ireland, Allan Stewart, Bill Cullum, and Cliff Pinker. Nemeara Camp images also include a medical examination of an unidentified local man, local children and men, the cookhouse, tents, hospital “bure” [thatched hut], a combination water heater and incinerator, mess hut under construction, swimming area in river [including competition?], and Nemeara mission church (with Mt Boa in the background). Images from Bourail show the gendarmerie, Main Street, and a church. Also view of Nouméa Harbour Treasury Island images show scenic views, including the river mouth at Malsi and the northern tip of Mono Island. Solomon Islanders are photographed including local men trained to fight by 34th Battalion, A Company tent, vegetation, local church (following rebuild by 29th Battalion) and [another?] destroyed church, men packing up the QM [Quartermasters?] store, and group getting ready to play “Tennaquoits”. Identified men are Tom Murphy, Jock Plunkett, Fred Walker, and Martin. Some show men posing with “Jap Souvenirs” (including flag, swords, knife, and trumpet), sick and injured men at 7th Field Ambulance [MDS?] at Stirling and on stretchers being evacuated by barge. Images of military equipment and armaments include G pounder anti-tank gun, 50 mm Bofors Ack Ack gun, a jeep (being dug out of mud), beach landing craft, beach scene with men rolling drums [fuel?], LST being unloaded at Purple Beach (Stirling Island), ship ‘Tyrone’, and a boat described as a “Seaplane tender”. Description: One album of photographs and postcards, probably compiled by Elizabeth Porteous of the NZANZ (New Zealand Army Nursing Service) who was awarded the ARRC (Associate Royal Red Cross). These are mainly postcards of her travels in England and Scotland during World War I. Also contains some images related to nursing work. The photographs relating to military nursing work include group portraits of patients and staff at a military hospital, two taken during Christmas celebrations. There are also two photographs of an interior of a large industrial building being used as a dormitory, probably to house soldiers. Subjects and locations are all unidentified. Postcards include: Views of Edinburgh, Scotland, include Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle, The Abbey Strand, St Giles Cathedral, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur's Seat, Queen Margaret's Chapel, and the 'audience room' at the former residence of John Knox. Views of Bath, Somerset, England, include Bath Abbey, the Grand Pump Room Hotel, and Roman colonnades. Views of Brockenhurst, Hampshire, England, the location of No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, and including views of the Rose and Crown Hotel. Views of Christchurch, Dorset, include the Christchurch Priory Church, Constable's Ruin (Constable's House), Highcliffe Castle, and a thatched cottage at Wick Ferry. Views of the county of Kent, England, include the pier, promenade and time ball at Deal, also Canterbury Cathedral, and the town of Sandwich. Miscellaneous New Zealand scenes include two photographs taken by Muir and Moodie: The Green Lake, Rotorua, and Dannevirke railway station, taken 1 Apr 1912. There is also a postcard with the photographer identified as 'Daroux' (probably either Louis John Daroux or James Henry Daroux), taken 28 August 1916, showing WWI troops from the 18th regiment reinforcements marching over Rimutaka Hill, Wellington. Description: Photographs relating to the life of Bryan Scoullar, taken ca 1917-2010, particularly his service in the army during World War II. Bryan Scoullar collected all the images and took some of them. Images are arranged in a loose chronological order, and contain: Family photographs, circa 1917-1941, showing his mother Genevieve (nee Pope), his father Arthur, and his brother Patrick. Snapshots of the family are taken at the family residence in Wellington and during outings and holidays in New Zealand. Includes images of Patrick during the war, at home on leave, and overseas. Two school photographs taken at Marist Brothers' School, Wellington, probably of Patrick or Bryan. Photographs related to Bryan Scoullar's military service in North Africa during World War II. These are taken and collected in Egypt, Syria, and the Western Desert, ca 1941-1942. There are also some images taken during his training at Trentham army camp ca 1940, and documenting journey on board ship 'Nieue Amsterdam'. Contains images of patients, staff and activities at No. 3 General Hospital, Egypt, where he worked as an orderly. Includes tourist photographs taken and collected during travels in Egypt, and a trip with 5th field ambulance unit to Jerusalem and Syria. Also a group of Images taken at the Bulldog Club, Helmieh. Events include: celebrations to mark Bryan's 81st and 93rd birthday, a Christmas party in 1988, St Patrick's College Centenary 1985, a dinner at Bunratty Castle, [a restaurant in Australia?], and Anzac Day commemorations at Huntleigh Rest Home, Karori, ca 1990s.
