Description: A base map of the Rotorua district has numerous added notes, handwritten in the margins and over the top half of the map itself. These cover a variety of topics and include names of individuals, Maori chiefs, where they lived with some events and occupations. Multiple Maori place names are included with descriptive notes in English. Some dates are recorded with details of battles and numbers killed. Topographical features are marked, such as land cave, waterfall, hot spring and unrelated references such as a note about a half-full kete of tawa berries. Names include: Pirimi Mataiawea, Gilbert Mair, N'whakane, Paddy Murphy - deserter from Imperial Regt., Te Waharoa, T.H. Smith - Maketu, Tamati te Aorangi - Maori war veteran. Description: A landscape design plan of the gardens surrounding the whare (house), (presumably in the Wairarapa) written in Maori. Shows the context of the plan in relation to the back road, the house and the stream. Describes the type of trees for specific areas (eg Rakau Maori Pakeha hoki = Maori and Pakeha trees over here; Munga rakau pakupaku tenei = small trees over here). Designates flower beds (He putiputi kikonei) and vegetable beds. Writing on the reverse of the map includes 'Hepire tenei kakati'. Description: Comprises maps compiled and collected by George Leslie Adkin and added to by Keyes mainly for a proposed history of Porirua. Covers the wider Porirua Harbour area including Pukerua Bay, Titahi Bay, Paekakariki, Pauatahanui, Plimmerton, Mana, and Kapiti islands. The maps show early Maori place names and sites including pa and urupa; some European sites such as whaling stations and barracks as well as topographical features, soil deposits, bush lines, a submerged forest and peat beds. Several maps give old Maori tracks between the Hutt River and Porirua Harbour. Several maps show the view points and direction of material sketched by Angus, Brees, Mary Marshall and others and also for some photographs. The collection includes some printed maps with pencil and ink annotations relating to early place names and settlement sites. One map of the coastline from Castlepoint to Mataikona River, Wairarapa with place names and topographical features. Quantity: 45 map(s). Description: Plan of archeological site on Kaitaia Road (four miles north-east of Ahipara and five miles south-west of Kaitaia) on Ahipara survey district, block five, parts 13, 14 and 15, next to the Native land 'Pukepoto block'. Shows old water course, old drain, remains of Maori kainga (on mound and encircling drain) and store pits. New drains, unformed roads, four homesteads, a school, and four streams are shown (Waitapu, Kohi, Whau and Waipapa). At the top of the plan an undrained raupo and wiwi swamp is indicated. Land blocks are owned by: Pt. 13, L. Masters and S. Masters, Pt. 14, Pt. 15, A.W. Masters. Includes inset of enlargement named 'Large pits' a and b.
