Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Description: A set of vignettes, headed 'The Christchurch Press last week celebrated its jubilee'. At the top left, are two people wrapped up in newspapers (the Press and the Lyttelton Times) shaking hands above a sea marked 'politics' and titled 'hands across the sea'. Top right, two large hands, one marked England, one Germany, pushing the Prince of Wales (later George V) and a German princess towards one another to accompany a text -' it is whispered that there are prospects of a match between the Prince of Wales and the Princess of Germany'. Below that is an angry man holding a Post Office savings box, with accompanying text 'Once money has been placed in the new Post Office money boxes it cannot be removed except by the P. O. officials. The man had been hoping to retrieve money to catch a tram. Below that is a drawing titled 'The other cheek' and featuring Prime Minister William Massey, holding his lower back and facing Auckland M. P. George Fowlds. Surrounding text explains that Massey has offered to pay Fowlds' expenses if he would tour New Zealand repeating his Pukekohe speech. Centre left is an Irish musical group, one with an Irish harp, with Christchurch tossing them coins - 'The Irish envoys on tour in their specialty 'Shell out for Liberty'. To the right is 'The catch of the season' showing a man leaping to catch a ball with accompanying text explaining that Dan Reese anticipates no trouble in rasing the £2000 for Lancaster Park. Bottom left is a scene in Cathedral Square showing the statue of John Robert Godley on top of a tram shelter, with a clock for a face, 'next tram' for a hat, and one arm pointing to Railway, the other to Opawa. The accompanying text reads 'The good old tram-shelter - Godley statue question has cropped up again... Why not do away all sentiment & put the statue to some practical use?'. At the bottom right is William Massey swinging a cat labelled 'Supreme Court allocation' facing 'Mrs Conservative Press'. The accpmanying text reads 'Mrt Massey in spite of the protests of a section of the Opposition press continues to support Mr Allen's legislation for Supreme Court judges. Description: Crowd gathered on Ferry Bridge, Heathcote River, Canterbury, for the opening of the bridge by the Minister for Education, George Fowlds. The original bridge, built 1864, is visible on the left. Photographed on 9 March 1907 by an unidentified photographer. Notes on reverse of print include: "This second bridge, since replaced, was to be worked on the drawbridge principle but failed to function.
