Description: Lantern slides of gardens and related subjects taken ca 1930s-1950s. Five slides are labelled as being taken by William Williams in Christchurch during the 1930s, but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Views of various gardens, flower beds, and trees. Also associated buildings and garden features including steps, ornamental borders, ponds, large pools, streams, bridges, pathways, the rock garden at Windlesham Moor, and a band rotunda. - Four images of Abbotsford Park in Gloucestershire, England. - Six images of gardens in Christchurch taken by William Williams between 1933 and 1937 (with labels giving the addresses). Another image shows the greenhouse at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. - Aerial views of two extensive formal gardens. One image shows gardens around a castle with moat, possibly in Holland. - Delphinium trial garden bed with sign, identifying it as held by "R H S" [Royal Horticultural Society?] and the British Delphinium Society. - Eleven images appear to be from commercial series. Nine feature drawings relating to garden design; the others show water lilies and a circular floral 'clock'. - Another series show plant portraits in garden settings, including at Windsor Great Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. These images are numbered and may be from a commercial set. - Also contains an image of an unidentified man [gardener?] carrying baskets on a pole. Description: Photographs of lakes, mountains and valleys in the Lake Manapouri, Doubtful Sound areas. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include C S Ross, Alec Tuff (images 109-111), Miss Theomin [Dorothy Michaelis Theomin] (images 90, 97 and 111), Miss Wimperis (a folder entitled "Miss Wimperis" containing images numbered 86-101), J Murrell (a folder containing images numbered 102-107), J Ewart (image no. 93), D.W.(image no. 112), and probably W A K Kennedy. Several images show individuals (only one of whom has been identified (W. Grave)), and unidentified groups. A number of views show launches and their passengers on Lake Manapouri and in Doubtful Sound. Between images numbered 107 and 108 are three empty folders entitled "Waiau River"; "On the track from Lake Manapouri to the Sd.; "On the Sound (Doubtful Sd) and its arms, Smith, Hall, Crooked, Deep Cove". Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod. Description: A pocket inserted inside the front cover holds two photographs of wedding celebrations at a British Army regiment in India. One of the scenes shows a large party of men and women, including British and Indian men in uniform. These were taken circa 1910. The main body of the album contains views of Canterbury, Otago and the West Coast of the South Island, taken around 1877 by an unidentified photographer. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly showing facets of Christchurch and Lyttelton. The first scenes are a group portrait of men and women with the caption `Camera club (flashlight)'; two photographs of a wedding, the first a group portrait, and the second the bride and groom, both scenes taken outside on a lawn outside a conservatory; the altar at St Thomas' (Newtown, Wellington); and an exterior and an interior view of St Barnabas' Church, Norfolk Island. The rest of the album is scenes of the Christchurch and Lyttelton areas, including interior and exterior views of Christ Church Cathedral and of St Michaels' Church, Christchurch; views of Lyttelton and the Lyttelton Wharves; the Canterbury Museum and its gardens; Hagley Park and the Avon River.
