Presbyterian Support Otago Community History Programme: Walker Street oral history project

Date: 1988 - 1989 - 1991

By: Presbyterian Support Services (Otago); Frizzell, Helen Isobel, active 1986-; Goodyear, Rosemary, active 1988-1989; Thomson, Jane, 1944-; Presbyterian Support Otago

Reference: OHColl-0951

Description: This project is a collective portrait of life in Walker Street (now Carroll Street), Dunedin, in the early 1900s from the point of view of people who were children growing up in the area. Walker Street was Dunedin's Chinatown in the late 1800s, and was also home to many Lebanese families from the 1890s. The area also had many European families, both poor and wealthy. Concern for children of poor families growing up in Walker Street led to it being a centre for social reform and innovative social work. In 1916 an attempt was made to change the street's image and character by changing its name to Carroll Street. In 1988 the Community History Programme of Presbyterian Support Services (Otago) undertook this project to discover what the area was like from the point of view of those who grew up there. Interviewees are Elizabeth Briton, Redmond Carroll, Negia Dale, Sarah Facoory, Albert Farr, Irene Given, Julian Johns, Jamelee Joseph, Alan Kwok, Sam La Hood, Constance Louisa (Connie) Manning, Ian McMillan, Isabel McMillan, Jessie Milne, Reginald Roberts and Arthur Sew Hoy. Information about this project, a map of the Walker Street area, and material from an exhibition "Shirakee - children in Walker Street 1900-1920" held in Dunedin, are held in the backfile.
