Description: A collection of postcards and printed views (possibly from a magazine) of New Zealand scenes primarily of towns and cities rather than scenic views. They include one of two Maori women washing clothes at Rotorua, another of the Royal visit in 1927 and a family group of seven men and three women possibly taken in Belfast. A number of the postcards have been used. Also included are five original photographs which have been captioned with the family connections: a soldier in uniform, possibly named Ralph Ferguson; Uncle Henry Babe's wedding photograph; cousin Violet Bradford in America; Albert and Elizabeth (Eliza) Babe (brother and sister) and four others; Thomas and Fanny Babe (grandpa and grandma) with Eliza, Harold, Albert, Olivia, Queenie and Gladys. Description: An album of photographs, and ephemera, of circa 1930s, relating to Claude Singleton's Wellington signwriting business - 'Singleton Signs Ltd'. The album appears to have been compiled by the business in circa 1930s, probably by Singleton himself. Photographers are unidentified. The album mainly contains photographs of signs, produced by the company. These include wallboard signs, cut-outs, posters, hoardings, iron signs, calico signs, window displays, roadside signs, wall signs, and truck and van displays. Many are photographed in situ and some are photographed in the studio or workroom. Also, an exterior shot of the Singleton Signs studio in Newtown and interior shots of Tory Street studio. Also shots of signs being worked on in the studio or workroom, road-side signs being erected, men wearing sandwich board signs, and street views with exteriors of some buildings shown. Also contains photographs of exhibition stands at the 'Winter Show', including images of automobiles, motorcycles, and fridges. Also included is one image of an unidentified bridge and river Glued into the album are letters of recommendation, examples of letterhead for the business, and leaflets advertising the business. Refers to his training and employment as a radio officer on coastal ships for a British company in Hong Kong. Mentions meeting his New Zealand-born wife Betty in China, marrying her in 1935, then returning to New Zealand. Discusses his father having returned earlier and set up another fruit and vegetable shop in Cuba Street and working for the family business (Wong Tong and Sons) which he joined when he came back. Comments about working in the green grocers markets and moving to Nelson in 1954 where he joined another family firm. Talks about his father's choice to immigrate to New Zealand, family experiences as Chinese immigrants and reflects on his cultural identity as a Chinese New Zealander.
