Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: Maori children in a waka, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly's party to the Far North, March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - A water frolic The vice-regal party left Te Teko on the morning of 18 March 1904, reaching Auckland (by coach and train) the same evening. They then boarded HMCS Iris and cruised up the east coast. After first landing at the Doubtless Bay cable station, they returned south to Russell. (Source: Malcolm Ross, "Through Tuhoe Land"). Description: Album of photographs taken by W W Rowntree. They cover a journey between Wairoa and Taupo, travelling on foot with a packhorse, and with two companions between Taihape and Wairoa. The album includes two envelopes with loose photographs, one contains one photograph of a Maori family seated on the ground in front of a thatched building, and the other contains four photographs entitled "Waikaremoana" in pencil on the envelope. Three of these show groups of Maori, and one shows the lake. A handwritten slip inserted in the front of the album gives the following information: "The exact location of Maori homes not known. Note storehouse in actual use; totara bark (?); thatch (in loose photo); Mokau Falls; track at Hopuruahine Bluffs; men's dress (one man wearing a waistcoat with fob watch chain, p 16); Maori boy holding a camera; Earthquake Gully; a road around a lake; Crow's Nest Geyser etc" Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Roland James Searle, circa 1930s. The first subject is the opening of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial (Cenotaph), and includes a programme of the dedication and handing over on Sunday 17th April, 1932 (p 001-012). That is followed by the consecration ceremony for the National War Memorial and War Memorial Carillon (again with a copy of the programme), held on Anzac Day, April 25th, 1932 (p 015-023). Pages 029-033 show the arrival of the Wellington Jubilee Dock in 1931, the floating dock which was towed from England by two Dutch tugboats. The next sequence is entitled "The Express pulls out - Thorndon", and follows the Express to Wanganui where views show a river-boat trip up the Whanganui River (p 037-056), and include a map of historical areas on the river compiled by Annabell & Marchant, surveyors of Wanganui (p 055). The train trip is continued in the next section, and includes an illustrated diagram of the Raurimu Spiral, then arrival at the new Beach Road Auckland Railway Station. Photographs of Auckland include the Auckland Institute and Museum, Auckland University, Grafton Bridge, a sailing ship at the wharves, and the Auckland Zoo. Further North there are scenes of ploughing, a mine entrance, rock formations at Waro, and the Taheke Falls; before travelling to Rotorua and the surrounding thermal regions. A number of images were taken at Whakarewarewa, including photos of Paul Thomas and his wife, along with scenes showing women washing clothes in hot pools, a woman with a baby on her back holding a rope with a food basket cooking in the pool, children in a hot pool, and men at work carving. Paul Thomas wrote to thank Searle for sending him copies of photographs (p 101, written on May 1st 1932). Later photographs again with the train often in view show timber felling and milling, and views of the Arapuni hydroelectic power station. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
