Description: Caricature of Alexander Melvin Burns, General Manager of the Christchurch Press from 1925, with part of the spire of Christchurch Cathedral visible outside his office window. Below the caricature are the signatures of senior editors on The Press. The artist was working for The Press at the time this portrait was drawn. Signatures (as far as can be deciphered) are for G. Burns, K McC Studholme, L. T. Aschman, F. A. Marriott, W. J. Green, F. N. Grant, B. O'Neill, Walter G Stack, Hartley Smith, A. H. Carrington, L. A. Barrett, Jas Drummond, W. J. Wilson, J. C. McKinnon, J. Burns, W. Peebles, A. N. Duttrage [?], W. G. Banfield and one illegible, possibly H. W. Kinoir. Several of the signatories were fellow-journalists and senior editors under Burns. Description: Interior view of Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson, New Zealand. Photographed by the Steffano Webb Photographic Studio, Christchurch. Source of descriptive information - Negative register and inscriptions on negative. The third Christ Church Cathedral building in Nelson was a gothic revival design by British born architect, Frank Peck, to be built in Takaka marble. Its foundation stone was laid in 1925, but construction stopped in 1932 and the incomplete nave and west front were roofed over, the nave being given a temporary ceiling, seen here. In 1954, Wellington based architect, Ron Muston provided the simplified design that was completed in 1967, and which incorporated the finished parts of Frank Pecks design.
